Hi. I'm looking for a digital camera. I've always used my mobile phone up to now but I'm going to Finland in December and want a decent camera to take photos as my htc one camera is destroyed. I don't know a lot about what to look for but after doing a bit of research, found the Canon Powershot SX700 HS. Is this a good camera for the price (£210). I'm looking to spend around £200 and don't want to go much higher (or at all unless it's really worth it). I'll mainly use it for photos but would ideally have one that can take reasonable video as well. The SX700 HS claims to take full 1080p. Would this be a decent choice? Are there any others you could recommend? Thanks in advance.

My only advice is to get one with a view finder as well as digital screen. This is because taking pictures in bright sun light with a digital screen is impossible and very frustrating.

Try the Canon SX50.
The SX60 is out now, so the price for an SX50 will be good. Initial reports are that the new SX60 isn't that much of an upgrade.
The zoom on the SX50 is amazing, and with the image stabaliser works incredibly well. A lot of twitchers are using the SX50 now rather than humping massive DSLRs with huge lenses around.
I've heard users say that the video on the SX50 is better than their dedicated video cameras.

Don't know too much about cameras but I found www.buyacamera.co.uk to be a good company to deal with and found them to be the cheapest by far and the package deals that they have are really good too.

I once broke a digital camera by treading on it. I think it was a digital camera anyway. It might have been something else.

Cheers, I'll bear that in mind. The one I found doesn't have one but I'll look at the alternatives. Try the Canon SX50. The SX60 is out now, so the price for an SX50 will be good. Looks like the sx50 is closer to £300, which I'm not willing to go to. I'll monitor the price until I get one. Cheers all of you for your advice.

Have you looked on ebay, you should be able to get one for under £250 fairly easily.

Just googled them and seen one at £228.99 and £229.99. Also google discount codes for the shop that you see it in as it'll become even cheaper providing if course that it's recognised.

Panasonic TZ60 compact but with LCD and Optical view finder plus 30x zoom makes it the camera of choice for both experienced and novice photo hobbyists. Varies in price around the £250-£280 but many places are doing £30 cash back deals.

Varies in price around the £250-£280 but many places are doing £30 cash back deals. They got that in buyacamera with the £30 cash back offer but it's £289.99 and they're offering a free Panasonic leather case with it at a value of £29.99.

I got the Fuji finepix S4500 and is an awesome camera and it's less than £120 in some places. I had two from buyacamera with memory card and genuine case for £109.99 each with free next day delivery. They got none left in stock but more in soon. Great camera, steal of a price.

Unfortunately I've already bought the sx700 hs. I say unfortunately, but I doubt I'd be experienced enough to know the difference. Cheers for your help, though.

But no optical view finder so it's a no from me. I do much photography on my kayak so many opportunities are lost because of glare from the sun and water reflection that make an optical view finder essential. Would still recommend the Panasonic TZ60 for an extra sixty quid or so.

I never use that to take a pic, whatever the light or conditions.

Surely you need to see the subject of your picture or does it have an optical view finder that I cannot see on the advert? If I was taking a picture of an Egret on the banks of the Yealm from my kayak using zoom I would need to see it in a view finder be it LCD or optical.

You are losing me Lawrie ...... ?
The camera has a viewfinder. This camera leads the market (for price) as a bridge camera.
Have we got our wires crossed here somewhere.

A camera without a viewfinder would be like a teapot without a spout? I thought that you had maybe missed something. Anyway OP has been sorted out and has bought his camera.

I thought that you had maybe missed something. Anyway OP has been sorted out and has bought his camera. I am talking about optical view finder vs LCD view finder. Many cheaper compact cameras do not have an optical view finder but only the LCD screen which makes them impossible to use when in bright sun light. They omit the optical view finder to cut the cost. Sorry, you're right, wires crossed mate.

I see loads of people these days with good (expensive) cameras, just holding them at arms length, using the LCD. I suppose if they take enough pics, often enough, they will get some good uns eventually ....

Viewfinders? They're for wussies! My eight year old took this without a viewfinder... Could she have done it at 600 yards? He's not tried, so who knows? For what it's worth, I rarely use a view finder, I think this was the last time I took one, back in the summer, when I had to take the shot at arms length. They have a time and a place, but they are usually a pain in the arse. Attachment Deleted

I do actually use the LCD screen for close up shots.
