The result appears to be a foregone conclusion , but out of interest I will stay up to watch it I think ........best not to be too smug about the Liberals until the fate of that party you don't support is revealed

Although I no longer live in the UK I do watch these events with a lot of interest, and I think Labour have pulled a right flanker here, in a seat that they no they have zero chance of winning, putting forward a Muslim ( correct me if I am wrong ) in a previously Tory held seat is going to guarantee that their small core Labour voters will switch to UKIP meaning that the Tories will lose another seat which is bad kudos for them, with really little impact on Labour. I wonder if come the next election the main stream parties will adopt some of UKIPS policies and use the previously little used race and immigration card.

Emily Thornbury proving the contempt labour have for the voters. Yes, appalling gaffe...and one of the reasons thousands of working class people have been lost by Labour. Disappointed the Libdems edged out the Raving Loonies.

The start of many more UKIP victories across the country. People have had enough and are voting with their feet. This isn't a protest vote , it's the start of a sea change in British politics. As for the Liberals....the end is nigh.

At least they seem to want to look after the normal man/woman on the street.

Can't have been more than eight.

The proof of things won't really become apparent untill May .....things are looking rosy for Ukip at the moment , but things tend to be different in a general election

This was only a narrow victory for ukip. 2000 votes
I wonder what the result would have been If it wasn't a defection.
The result is not as good as ukip would have wanted and it wasn't that bad for the Tories.
I suspect he is a decent constituency MP

I suspect he is a decent constituency MP I think if the guy had not been a previous standing Conservative MP , UkIp may not have won the seat ....two MPs , two Tory defectors , it would be interesting to see their performance if they had candidates of their own standing ....there is always going to be an amount of voter loyalty towards a previous encumbent.....Nigel Farage knows this is the best strategy to employ if he wants to get a reasonable amount of MPs under his belt before going into the next election .....it will be interesting to see what happens come May.

I think Ukip more than a protest vote, it's a polarisation of people who have kept quiet for years.
Are we to expect a re-emergence of the communist party as further evidence that Labour and the Tories have lost any credibility they ever had claiming to represent the people's views.
It seems clear to most now ALL MP's will support anything "Trendy" like PC issues or green issues to hang on to that job and with it the fat expenses sheet and pay packet.
Is this the day of the Tooting Popular Front (power to the people)

I think after Clacton I read a UKIP voter was asked why he had voted UKIP and his reply was because the sitting Tory MP had done nothing for the area.....

This is a bad result for the Conservative Party make no mistake about that. They will be worried about this privately but will dress it up as a 'little local difficulty'.
For UKIP to really set the cat amongst the political pigeons they now need a few defections from Labour.
The General Election is going to be very interesting.

Conservative / Ukip coalition.
It's been in the planning for the last 3 years and everybody seems to be falling for it. The working class will be well and truly shafted.
Nicely done.

UKIP will take seats off the Tories 'down South' but won't really touch Labour in the North. The Lib Dem vote will be split between UKIP/Labour/Greens. This may further reduce the Conservative share of the vote. Mitigating against this of course is the overwhelmingly pro-Conservative/UKIP & virulently anti-Labour Press (ironically enough almost entirely foriegn owned !!). What worries the Conservatives is that the Economy is starting to slow down at the wrong time (politically) and that might affect their share of the vote. The best thing Labour can do at the moment is to sit back and observe and see which way the political land lies. The Election will be a lot closer than people think..in my opinion.

They are more likely to win marginal labour seats than marginal Tory seats. - the anti EU and immigrant scaremongering of ukip will more likely resonate with working class labour areas than the Tory heartlands.

People seem to be mistaken in thinking that your traditional Labour voter supports immigration and will vote accordingly. They won't. Just ask any one from a council estate. The only ones that will be voting Labour are immigrants (the parties only allies) and those of us who can see light at the end of the tunnel. A back bench rebellion. Get rid of Milliband and start again.

You are wrong in thinking it wont touch Labour, just look at the recent result in the Heywood & Middleton by election. The traditional Labour voters are pissed off with them and have been guided by the media into thinking Ukip are the alternative to the Tories now that the Lib Dems are out of the picture. It's all been in the planning.
