Get's brought up quite often, but after last night's revival, I reckon we get back to basics and play this formation. Two proper wingers, gives diouf a striking partner and also provides a little stability. Old, but gold.

I would love it. Diouf with Bojan playing off him. Arnautovic left. Moses right. Or swap as preferred. Two central midfielders, Adam pushing on with Cameron holding the midfield or Glenn when he's fit.

4-4-2 is dead in modern football, few teams have the quality to make it work.
4-4-1-1 is as close as we could use.

4-4-2 is dead in modern football, few teams have the quality to make it work. 4-4-1-1 is as close as we could use. 4-4-2 is the simplest formation to make work. Theoretically, if every man fulfils his duties in full, it can combat the majority of other formations including those that pack the midfield.

I'd certainly give it a whirl.
A few teams are starting to revert back to it of late.
At least players can't hide as everyone knows their role.

4-4-2 is dead in modern football, few teams have the quality to make it work. 4-4-1-1 is as close as we could use. This. You need incredibly good central midfielders to pull it off, and equally brilliant wingers to provide the main goal threat. Stoke don't have either, at least not enough not to get battered by certain Prem teams.

Love the fact that MH & the Team are prepared to be flexible with the formation. So far they've been willing to utilize a 4-3-3, a 4-5-1, a 4-4-1-1 and a 4-4-2. Sometimes mixing it up during games. If you've got the necessary personnel the paper tactics shouldn't matter too much, because whether in attack or sitting back the shape/formation will shift. You've got to know your enemies too.
Having said that, I reckon our available starters lend themselves towards the 3-5-2. Three at the back.
Our remaining defensive folk are better suited to centre back than flying wing backs. The absent Bardsley, Cameron and Pieters are ok by me, but they're not really attacking wing backs anyway. Bego can command the box, and with Whelan out we're missing the necessary tidy-upperer. And Huth isn't in the plans at the moment. If we use Muniesa as left back we worry about becoming exposed by his forays forward. And there are questions re Wilson in the middle. We suffer from a laboured transition from front to back, and the isolated striker stuff ain't working. Better to create a formation that allows for a front two partnership. We're currently trying to play a quick counter attacking style which often leaves Crouch running the 'channels'. It's an ineffectual hybrid of styles. It confuses me, and it seems to be confusing the players. The 3-5-2 as utilised by Bruce and Redknapp can accommodate a lightweight no10 if required, and create some width to pull the opposition out of shape.
-------------------------Bego---------------- ----------------Cameron Shawcross Wilson----- -------------Assaidi N'Zonzi Sidwell Muniesa-- -------------------------Adam----------------- ----------------------Diouf Arnie {Bojan/Ireland/Moses}
Not necessarily against the Hammers because I'd like to see how the N'Zonzi/Cameron partnership pans out. But with our squad I think there's loads of scope for a 3-5-2 approach.
