I can't believe first half how many passes Wilson played to Shawcross and vice versa. It was as though they were counting up the passes. It really caused us the problem of being pressurised into our half. Sparky must of had a word at half time with them though as it seemed to disappear thank goodness.

More movement and urgency ahead of them in the second half.

Can only pass forward when there is a target. No movement in first half.

the fullbacks need to push up and the midfielders need to find some space and make themselves available to receive the ball.....it's very frustrating to watch especially when after half a dozen sideways ball Ryan ends up lofting it up the pitch

Too many times the ball is not played quick enough. I said it on another thread, the defence is to blame for our slow tempo, not the midfield. One occassion last night shawcross played it to geoff with a man up his arse, who passed it straight back as no option, shawcross then played it to could have been Arnie or Bardsley again with a man up his arse and no opportunity to do anything so back to Ryan who played long and we lost it. No prob with a long pass now and again but slowing it down as he did allowed southamnpton to push up, condense play and force the loss of possession. The additional problem is when forwards make that run expecting the longer ball down the side or create the space for the midfielder and its not received, it creates that uncertainty.

That's something you see quite a lot in modern football, passing to a player who is being closely marked with him facing his own goal. What's he supposed to do with the ball ? I'm convinced the better players think a couple of passes ahead or at least can see options for the player they are passing to
