I cannot think of another sport where athletes are asked to leave the club that pays them and play for their country. I am as patriotic as the next guy but what is the benefit of a club releasing a player to play in internationals? I enjoy watchung euro and the world cup, but it seems a bit odd to me that players who make a great living off the club can go off and get hurt playing elsewhere or even miss matches for other tournaments. If someone can enlighten me on how the whole thing works Id really appreciate it!

I mean that when other athletes leave their teams for international duty, it generally happens during the offseason. To think that we lost our starting CDM in the middle of the season or that we could lose a number of players for a month for the Africa Cup of Nations makes no sense to me.

Don't know much about Cricket or Rugby to be fair but all national duty in basketball is in the offseason.

This is a problem that has run and run particularly since the Premier League started 20 years ago and prize money played a bigger part for clubs and players wages. Over the years many players have been "withdrawn" from international duty by clubs because of mysterious injury that miraculously disappears a week later. Also there is the added factor that fans have to endure several weekends during the season when there will be no competetive matches which are cancelled due to international games. Already this season we have lost two of these and there is another in November. It may already happen but if a player is injured on international duty then that country's FA should pay that players wages until he can play again. Personally because I have little or no interest in our international team, under the present coach, I hate the footballess weekends during the season.

Aren't International cricketers paid by the national team. Pretty sure here in Australia the ACB give contracts to Test, OneDay and 20/20 international players. Maybe it's not the done thing back in Blighty
