Anyone been to Bruges?
Anyone who has flown with Ryanair and get sent to the airport in Charleroi first? Is it easy to get to Bruges from there?
I've googled it and there seems to be some conflicting stories in the cost and the times but what I can gather you get a train to Brussels first then on again to Bruges, takes about two hour in total.
Other than that, any particular bars in Bruges to head for the best beer? Or with it being Belgium can you not really go wrong?

Not been to Bruges yet but done Brussels many times on day trips, time it right and you can get returns for £69 or £59 on the Eurostar and they do throw in an onward journey to Bruges for no more money. Watch the film In Bruges before you go if you haven't seen it already it's a pisser “ I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't."

Cheers, I've already messed it up by booking flights though. Stupdily went through tripadvisor (or something) and picked the hotel and then the Ryanair flights - Which conveniently land 2 hours away!
That said might have a couple of hours in Brussels before getting the train onto Bruges as you have to go there first. In Bruges is brilliant and I shall be watching it before we go.

Been to Bruges many times.
Loads of places to drink in the square-but can be pricey, but it is very picturesque when it is dark.
Venture to some of the back streets or follow some of the roads out from the square and the prices become alot more acceptable, and the range of beer just as expansive.
And don't be tempted to have a look round Charleroi first as it is a rough hole.

Bruges is great. Spoilt for choice in bars, restaurants and chocolate shops. If you're out of season, and it's pissing down with rain (which is often the case in Belgium), you might get lucky like me and my missus, who were the only customers one cold wet night in a brasserie in the main square. The owner treated us to a sampling of nearly all her beers and only charged us about a tenner for the night. We also met one of the significant number of English guys who are employed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. He was English, but was married to a Belgian woman and had lived in Bruges nearly all his adult life. He recognised our Lincoln number plate on the car and told us that he was originally from Lincoln himself. Like all these guys, he had a strange accent and an obvious love of the old country, even though he came across more as a Belgian who could speak fluent English, and had not been to England foe nigh on thirty years.
It's a pretty compact place and you can walk everywhere. A canal trip is a good idea as well.

Bruges is very nice We went on the Euro Star straight in to Brussels then train to Bruges took about 90 mins Easy walking and canal trip is worth a go. As mentioned lots of Beer and Chocolate ! Main square is really pretty and great to sit and have a beer in the evening, there is another square just behind which also nice and a wee bit cheaper Not sure how long you are there for but a trip to the war graves in Flanders definitely worth while, we went with a company called Quasimodo the guide was excellent it's an all day trip though and includes Ypres Don't forget it's French in Brussels and Dutch in Bruges ....... Have a great time

Been to Ypres about 8 times as well.
Just to be at the Menin Gate when the last post is being played is a moment you will probably never forget-especially if you look around it before it is busy and realise the enormity of the loss of life.
Tyne Cot is another place to visit as well if you get chance-it is the biggest Commonwealth cemetery in the world with 12,000 graves and 30,000 plus names that they couldn't fit on the Menin Gate!

Belgium is brilliant.
The trains cost fuck all, so nowhere's really out of limits. Just have a wander and explore!
Depending on how long you're there it's worth a visit to Ghent, which is on the train line from Bruges to Brussels. The Graslei is a beautiful part of the city centre, well worth visiting.

Echo that. My great great uncle is on the thiepval memorial, killed on the first day of the Somme in 1916. Rest in Peace. We Will Remember Them
