He's completely missed the point. He cites two quotes from almost 10 years ago yet Hughes himself makes the point that you learn to bite your tongue with experience. He's almost admitting it is something he has learnt himself. The most recent quotation he uses, from 2014, is a "that was a poor decision" remark. Hardly a brilliant example of overstepping the mark. You can file that article under complete bullshit. |

I laughed at the suggestion John Hartson could in some way take legal action against Coates for his comments. He isn't bigger than that as the article suggests, he just doesn't have a big enough bank balance to even try something like that.
The article itself seems to show Hughes as a younger, less experienced manager making quite strong comments he could get pulled up for in 2005/2006 to reaching 2014 and still being unhappy, but taking a more measured response and using the right terms to avoid getting himself in trouble.

Let's be honest. Everybody thinks we're crap, despite our 9th placed finish last year. So if you lose to Stoke you must have been cheated, otherwise it's an embarrassment. (Forget the fact you had an entire second half to win the match and failed to threaten more than once or twice).
Nobody really knows anything about us. Even the pundits (Souness, Trevor Francis and Heskey) on the arab sports channel were saying we play exactly the same as when Pulis was here, but are now rubbish under Hughes. I mean, come on, how hard is it to look up the four teams' involved on a match day previous league positions?
Everything from Shawcross is a rubbish hoofer, Moses is a diver and Stoke are an horrendous long ball long thrower team full of thugs will be believed until we challenge towards the top 6 for an extended period of time. Hardly anybody goes out of their way to watch teams who aren't involved at the top or bottom of the league.
Gone off topic slightly but, losing to Stoke is an embarrassment to teams who view themselves as 'proper' clubs. There has to be an excuse, it couldn't possibly be that their team and squad is slightly better than yours.
For whatever reason Swansea (and we'll probably see this with Southampton) view their club as in the middle of some kind of project that will lead to greatness. They can't seem to grasp the reality that they are at their peak and at best, can only hope to maintain their status.

Dear Mark,
Firstly, many thanks for taking the time to write a retort, referencing the recent fiasco involving the extremely naïve Gary Monk and the authoritative figure of Mark Hughes.
To clear this matter up, it is worth pointing out that Hughes gave his opinion that, as a Manager, you learn to bite your lip in post-match interviews as you acquire experience in the game. The basis of your article is to quote a couple of incidents where the Stoke Manager himself has crossed the line in the past. The problem is, these events took place almost 10 years ago. That “period of time” will be the “experience” he is referring to in his comments so your argument is completely redundant. The most recent example you cite, from 2014, was one where Mark Hughes voiced an opinion that a referee had made a “poor decision” after he suggested that Sterling had gone down too easily in the box and that the official had “bought it”. If Monk had taken a similar tact in his post-match ramblings, instead of throwing his toys out of the pram, we wouldn’t even be in this mess.
Monk is a young and inexperienced manager. He will do well to heed the advice offered by the man that got the better of him and his side on Sunday evening. He will certainly profit from doing just that, instead of throwing a hissyfit whenever his team is beaten fair and square.

I think all of those things exist geoff. Personally, I think you have to respect Swansea when you look at the past dozen years or so it really is the proverbial 'fairy tale'. I also like the fact that they have progressed together and retained several individuals that were there in their 'dark days'......Monk being a classic example. I've wished him well because I like to see his type succeed. I'm also sure that Mark Hughes and Peter Coates have the same respect for them but have reacted to Monk's ill conceived comments and the way the situation has been handled by the national media. That's all understandable since they are simply defending their own player. Speaking dispassionately, and removing my Stoke City sunglasses, I understand Monk's disappointment at losing a game they probably should have won (given their first half chances). He's a young, inexperienced manager who's coming under a bit of pressure and I actually have no problem with him at all. |

I just think it was a shame that what was a good well considered response should lose credibility, which the use of the insult will lead to ! Specifically on Monk, what was so wrong with him coming out and saying what he honestly thought!! Football and society is crying out for people who have the balls to speak their mind. Or do you just want the 'i'll trot out the usual banal cliche rubbish' type players and managers that send you to sleep. Even if i disagreed with what he was saying (I don't disagree) I would admire him for showing some guts. As a Cardiff fan I have to say that Monk has gone up in my estimation. As for slagging off Swansea....they play some beautiful football....love watching them as any neutral would

Let's see if Mr Monk is an honest man. I am waiting to se his reaction the next time one of his players wins a penalty for anything other than an obvious (i.e no room for debate)foul.
Clearly he will rush on to the pitch and remove his player immediately - then he will elevate himself to a level of respect.
If he does not, then he is obviously a man of absolutely no moral fibre. I also love watching Swansea - the hoof merchants have now beaten the beautiful footballers 3 times out of 4 games at Stoke, scoring 7 goals to Swansea's two. Clearly we are doing something wrong.
I await with interest.

I couldn't give a shit about Monk,Swansea, Hartson or that Gyppo that scored for them last year. They are making Cardiff look reasonable and must be really worried about relegation. Wish I had a quid for every debatable incident we've been subject to over the last 6 years
