I've been reliably informed by my mechanic that I need a new gearbox, when he informed me i almost fainted! Having heard my gasps of horror he advised looking at breakers yards for a re-conditioned one. Can anyone advise of any decent ones? I really have no idea what a breakers yard is or what they do? Do i just phone up and enquire, will they then take the gearbox from the car for me? Any advice appreciated. (its a Seat Altea 1.6 2009 gearbox)

Phone around a few local breakers yards and see if they have anything suitable in stock. If they do ask for a quote over the phone to collect? There are a few website companies, one locally www.car-transplants.co.uk . Have a search on fleabay to give you an idea of price. You maybe able to find something on gumtree but it could be a fair distance away.

Tried about 10 breaker yards and none had a Seat Altea, had numerous online quotes ranging from £350 to £1700.00. Had 5 quotes online from the same company......and 5 different prices?? How does that work?? Joke!

I bet you wish you didn't spend all that money in Birmingham now eh? Disney on ice, hotel and Jimmy Spices...there's half a new gearbox for you. Don't go to Newcastle and cut back on the Xmas presents for the kids and you will have saved up the money in no time. You are lucky Xmas is approaching as you will have cash saved up for that which you can use.
