I've been following this & we're now into series 2. It's written by a Blues supporter & is set in Edwardian times following a bunch of post WWI guys living off a life of ill gotten gains in the Small Heath area of Brum, in a burgeoning era of the motor trade et al. It's V loosely based on fact, as it seem that the real Peaky Blinders were a bunch of opportunist criminals. What I like about it is the settings, as it looks V similar to Stoke, all red brick & filth. I don't know about you, but knocking around the backs of Fenton as a kid, catching blue/green bottle flies for fun, with the smell of decomposing refuse in the air, all seems V familiar. It also shows our heritage of of violence. I'm sure many of you know stories of uber aggression from back in the day that were accepted, not that they don't still exist & it seemed to be a way of progression in the new Darwinian world. Funny how the old order/law/money always find their way back on top. I wonder, how many old school "entrepreneurs" still find themselves on top...

Missed series 1 but gave it a try on Thursday night and thought it was rather good (for the BBC anyway). Good back drop and a story line i could get into. Grim scenes, action and also a little graphic in parts.I belive some brum fans took to wearing flat caps after the first series was shown aswell.

Great screen play, wonderful sets and an awesome soundtrack, ultimately (just like the first season) let down by none of the leading characters being able to carry off a Brummie accent and some seriously suspect plot lines.

Hmmm ... I don't know about loads of research Millsy, I've seen Knight attempt to defend the poor accents before and found him pretty unconvincing if I'm honest: www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/peaky-blinders-creator-steven-knight-7808392
As I said, I think the production/editing/photography is all great, the sets are wonderful and it's got an awesome soundtrack but I think some of the plot lines are pretty ropey if I'm honest, I don't think it's a patch on Boardwalk Empire in that regard, although the sets are probably more authentic.
I just think it has the potential to be so much more.
But hey, that's just my opinion.
Good point about Stephen Graham!

here you go mate www.newman.ac.uk/news/3633/newman-lecturer-provides-historical-consultancy-for-peaky-blindersalso it's important to remember that Small Heath at the time had a lot of Irish immigrants and Scousers in the area so the accent of that area differed from the rest of Brum because of that as well. to be honest though, it's a minor issue in what is a superb TV show compared to most other "period" pieces on British TV

Brilliant series, but I wasn't happy with the audio quality in either series... when they stage whispered I couldn't make it out - had to go out and buy a soundbar to improve it.

If you read up on the Peakys, you'll find that it's not at historically accurate, but it's still a good effort.
Agree with some of the comments on some of the storylines. I found them somewhat convoluted, seemingly showhorned into the show to give it some padding. Also thought the accents were a bit crumbly. Murphy's Irish brogue comes out a bit too much, and Sam Neill - despite being born in Northern Ireland - does a fairly average Northern Irish accent. A lot of the support cast also have fairly suspect accents. I get that the Small Heath accent would be different than the Brummie we know today, but I think that argument is being bandied about too much to cover for the actors struggling with it.
A good show, but I think it's suffered from the makers using too many big names to try and sell the series to America.

A bit late to the party but I've just started watching this on Netflix after being reccomended it for ages, only on episode 3 mind you. Agree with the accents being a bit dodgy especially the communist, though I think Cillian Murphy is superb in it so far and I can't say I've noticed any dodgy plot lines though maybe that is to come. I think each episode is about 15 minutes too long, I'm struggling to get through an episode in one go.
Filming is complete on 3rd series as well I have read this week.

If you lay it along side other TV drama of the same ilk, I don't think it is that good. Borrows too much from already done gang or gangster based Tv shows. Doesn't offer anything else that hasn't been already done. I think the BBC wanted to make something like Boardwalk Empire or The Sapranos only because they had both been by PhraseFinder"> a success. Not because they thought they had by PhraseFinder"> a good Tv show. The BBC don't know shit these days and the peaky Blinders shows that. Used to be by PhraseFinder"> a good channel but there only interested in what sells of the momement rather than giving us something new. Fuck the BBC and it's Licence. Used to be good. Now it's wank

The plot lines seem very contrived on occasions but I still really enjoyed watching it. Cillian Murphy is a great actor and I'm looking forward to season 3.

When does Tom Hardy come into it because that's half the reason I'm watching?
