I was really pleased to see that Muniesa started tonight following the Sunderland cup game.
This sends out all the right messages to the squad that you can play your way in to the first team by putting in a good performance in the cup games.
Really pleased that Muni seems to have taken the bull by the horns and put in a great shift last night, he could be special.

I agree. Genuine competition for places.

I agree to most of what you say here, but I really feel more comfortable with Pieters playing at left back. Muni's pace is a big question mark to me at a fullback position, and I think we all could see that at times yesterday as well. To be honest I wasn't too impressed by Muniesa at Sland either despite him bagging a brace, because I think way too much of Sland's threat came because of him being out of position or being outpaced. To me a defender needs to to the basics first which is to defend!

Played great last night castle saw him as our week spot and sent most things that way and he moped up most things. He could not beat them in the air though

Given our wide midfielder options are not crazy at getting back, i still think Pieters is the better of the two options. I still see Muni as a long term replacement for Whelan as opposed to an out and out left back. Obertan skinned him a couple of times, and i see Pieters as the more robust defensively.
Agree with the OP though, it's about performing. It's right that you can play yourself into contention.

I thought he played well up until Obertan came on. May just be a fitness thing rather than pace.

I agree with others that his lack of real pace is a problem for a full back. Too much of his defending looks desperate rather than controlled. His positioning is not great, though that is one of Pieters' weaknesses, too.

They did drag him about a bit and he was out of position on a few occasions. He's still learning but I think Pieters is a better option at present.

It's great to reward a decent performance, but what does he do on Saturday? Is Muni in possession of the shirt now? (Assuming it was a number 3 left back shirt, which still belongs to Micky Pejic!)
On a slightly different note, at this moment in time I still can't get by with "Sparky". Nothing to do with the man who is doing a brilliant job, just the nickname. It's just a little bit too Manchester United for me. Minor point, and it's not a problem for other people to give him his traditional moniker, but somehow it sticks in my throat and doesn't come easily to me.
Maybe I'll come round to it over time, but at the moment for me he is Hughesy.
Is it just me or does anybody else have a similar problem?
