.... as you do, I saw the damnedest thing. As usual the bus was full with some standing and a woman (and I'm guessing something like Somali) actually stood up to offer her seat to a bloke who had his work cut out to persuade here to sit back down.
I'm used to seeing Muslim men sit down before their women but this was something else. I said to the Bride, watch and learn Duck....

Don't think so as I'm still here to type this, apart from that she was wrapped up to buggery.

Sticky Greens down the Gut......happy memories of my early Naval career in refit on an aircraft carrier in Valetta Harbour. Then Dom Mintoff got into power and turned their allegiance red for a while.

A pity that some on the island are decemating the migrating bird population for food, catching them with huge nets.

Only trouble is, it never seems to be finished building wise! Had a lot of funding from the EU apparently, they're certainly making the most of it

A pity that some on the island are decemating the migrating bird population for food, catching them with huge nets. They have done it for years . There used to be traps all over the Island to catch migrating Robins , which they used to stuff and sell as souvenirs in the shops , but they caught every other sort of species as well , the Robin situation was exposed a few years ago and tourists were outraged that they were actually buying real birds

They have spent a lot of those grants on improving the infrastructure of the roads on the Island , definately an improvement on what they used to be .

Then Dom Mintoff got into power and turned their allegiance red for a while. Yes I remember Dom Mintoff , late 60's early 70's ? He was socialist PM during the 50s and again 70s and early 80s. It was during his second stint in 1979 that he severed political links with UK and closed the Royal naval Dockyard. He became allies with Libya and allowed Russian warships to use Malta as a Mediterranean base which was strategically very naive giving them their only friendly base in the Med. However he wasn't all bad because he was credited for bringing in a raft of social reforms including pensions, the minimum wage, free schooling and medical service and a children's allowance.

Interesting Lawrie, he seems a very devicive character , despite those laudable social reforms you mentioned ,I think on the whole ( from what I've read ) he did a lot more harm to Malta than good , his hatred of Britain seems irrational , given that he was educated over here and at one point in favour of intergration with this country , friendship with Mao and Gaddaffi and the Soviets doesn't seem to add up for me , apart from his leanings towards the left of the Maltese Labour Party , an obnoxious ungrateful man in the extreme and a very shortsighted one at that

Or he could have just been a twat, obviously.
