See both Everton & Spurs lost matches that you would expect them to win after playing Europa League on thurs. We play Spurs in Nov ( 9/11 ) after they have played away on thurs in the Europa so I am expecting a win !!! Also shows what a poor result ours was at Hull after they had played in Europe on the thurs and only had 10 men for most of the game, we should have won easily. In fact we should have won all our away games so far this season.

Well, we were pretty poor at Hull and it was very disappointing not win against ten men, but they only started with two of the players that played in Lokeren the previous Thursday.
I'm not sure what teams Everton and Spurs fielded in their Europa League and Premier League games though.

The only club that played in Europe last week and won at the weekend was Arsenal, and they played an illness-hit team.

Jesus wept! In the days of real football when there were 42 league games a season plus FA Cup, League Cup, Anglo Italian Tournament and Texaco Cup it wasn't unusual to play 55-60 games a season. In fact in our epic 71-72 season Stoke played over 70 games with a 25 man squad. Jackie Marsh played 69 games Alan Bloor, John Ritchie and Mike Bernard over 60 games. Banksie, Pejic, Smith and Dobing played over 50 games and conversely, 9 players played 20 games or less with 4 of these playing 1 or2 games only. So any excuse about playing mid week and week end just doesn't wash with me tbh.

I look at the video of our League Cup win about once a year and it always strikes me that, by today's standards, that game was played at half pace. 45 games today is probably as hard on the body and mind as 60 games were back in the day.

The impact is that managers are getting far less time with their teams to drill them on the weekend opposition.
Anyone who thinks it causes no difference at all is a bit puddled.

Which is exactly why it screwed Stoke over. Tone was denied his relentless defensive training drills, and we suddenly started getting hammered by the likes of Bolton and Sunderland. The "too tired" thing is a red herring.
