Though we finished 3rd, we were actually second that night, Sunderland were third and Palace were fourth. Palace had their final game the following Friday and they beat Burnley at home. It was a foregone conclusion really and that's why the Sunderland fans knew they'd lost out at Wrexham. You might be right as this was a long time ago, but I'm sure it secured our promotion!? At least I must have thought so because it was a nerve wrecking moment for me I remember, and a relief when I heard the result! It did secure OUR promotion just the final place was up for grabs. Palace's win meant they finished top and left Sunderland 4th. Obviously pre play off days so they missed out

About the game itself, it's all been said so no point in repeating it.
Apart from the obvious joy my abiding and everlasting memory of the day came an hour or so after the final whistle when I got myself apprehended by the Boys in Blue. Four of us had gone to the game in my (almost) clapped out Mini. Driving back through Nottingham city centre, with two madly excited cheering fans hanging out of each window, we were pulled over and detained for almost an hour . . . for disturbing the peace by 'excessive honking' the car horn!! B******s!!

Reading about these memories always interests me. I don't mind if people reply with brutal honesty, but does it make me a poor fan (please refrain from not no1 jokes) if I admit if a conversation with Stoke fans was to take place and they starting reminiscing about this game and such obvious huge event in our past, that I would not have a scooby doo what game or event they were referring to? Being born in 1990 and having a father who was (and still is in all honesty) a fairweather fan at best and did not talk about momentous occasions in our past means I have never really pored through our history. I know we won the League Cup in 1972, but that really is about it. I have to admit, I do feel ashamed sometimes and it is something I need to remedy and quickly. Does anybody know of any good books to read that reflect on our history post 1960s? Doesn't make you a poor fan at all mate, takes all sorts, there is no better kind of fan to me, if it's in the heart it's in the heart regardless. I grew up learning the history and stuff through my dad's programmes and his memories, luckily for me he liked to talk about it. We have always lived away from stoke in my time and i think it gave us that extra edge when it came to our bond as stokies. Surrounded by supporters of the west midlands clubs we were like an two man army. I didn't actually attend my first game until 1980 so missed out on the promotion at notts county. Anyhow i've got a dvd i can copy for you if you want mate, called every step along the way. Got loads of clips, interviews etc, a definite education. Just pm me your address youth.

I was all set to go to this match, then ended up missing it for reasons too uninteresting to go into. The fact it was such an amazing end to the match left me haunted at missing it, and the disappointment has stayed with me to this day.
I really envy those that went.

Is there not one pic. Anywhere ??? Of the massed ranks behind the goal. Would love yo see a pic with our banners on. BIG BREN STRIKES AT THREE and ALAN DURBANS MAGIC MEN
We got fed up holding them at the end on big cains so threw them to the front. Where someone promptly set fire to them :-)

Think I saw a pic of it in delilahs bar once framed on the wall. Think it was loaned for some kind of exhibition. That was years ago. Such a shame not any footage or descent pics

This was my best ever day as a Stoke fan. I know we are now among the Premier league but this game stands out even after all those years. The following was just unbelievable. The drama at the end with Sunderland taking the league - just transistor radios reporting it. No internet or anything daft like that.
Great great day. I too got a clod of earth from off the pitch at the end.
Big Bren was my hero. Remember Roger Jones in goal. I remember him letting a cross go and it glanced the top of the bar. I was near the front and remember possibly Howard Kendal calling him something!
I also remember the Stokies in the river afterwards. Some crazy drunk Stokies on the way home.
Alan Durbans red and white army! What an army that day!

I was somewhere near this and frankly anyone of those mullets could be mine! And that is why it was so much better than the FA Cup Final you know. It seemed every last lunatic, nut, crackpot, kook, desperado, ripsnorter crazy, mad, insane, raving wild, demented, distracted daemonic nutter had fled the Potteries and made their way to Nottingham

Went to the last home game the week before against Newcastle with my Grandad and cousin and no tix available for the Notts Co game for this 12 year old out of town Stokie! It Seemed we had thrown it all away after a 0-0 draw with Newcastle (but learnt after that Blunderland had lost 1-2 at home against Cardiff)! A week later, listened to Radio 2 for updates from Meadow Lane and just had that belief that we were going to do it - proper first mental when hearing about Paul Richardson's late late goal and the day after watched Granada TVs ('Kick Off') main match - Wrexham v Sunderland - the only reference to Stoke being the final table showing us gaining promotion in 3rd place - job done and a happy chappy !!!

Just found these small photos .From when we got promotion last time.Check the Nazareth denim. Looking at the top photo is that Notts County in what appears to be a West Ham/Villa type strip or is it us? Just that I don't recall us having an away strip like that but why would Notts County as the home side be in their usual black and white zebra stripes?

Wasn't there myself but I'd say that it's us wearing our blue away shorts and the red tracksuit top, warming up before the kick off
Sent from my GT-I9505 using proboards

Also explains why there appear to be no opposition players on the field of play !
