Transport for London have rolled out contactless payments today, so if you have a contactless credit/debit card, you can use that to pay for the tube and trains when you're in London. They work exactly the same as Oyster cards, with the same fares and price caps. You just need to make sure you only use the one card throughout the day. The system will get confused and charge you twice if you use one card to enter and another card to leave.
Apparently, the plan is to eventually scrap the Oyster card, so if you have one, it's probably worth getting rid of it if you have a contactless card to replace it with. If you return it, you can get a refund for any credit on the card plus any deposit you paid. When we're down there on Saturday (or whenever you're next down there), hand it in at a tube station. You'll probably need a photo ID like a driving license or passport, plus a utility bill or bank statement to prove your address.

I have distrust of my contactless card. It defeats the point of having a pin number surely?

I have distrust of my contactless card. It defeats the point of having a pin number surely? Max is £20 ain't it - and I'm sure if someone went on a contactless shopping spree the banks would have to compensate you (at least I would hope so......)

I like the oyster system, works very fast and is convenient, but I much prefer using it on the buses to the crowded sweaty underground.

It's all over the Transport for London website www.tfl.gov.uk. Same fares and daily price caps as Oyster according to them.

The idea is make it easier to use for small things under £20, but still allow you to cancel it and get your money back if it gets nicked, which you can't do with cash. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that if your bank notices a sudden dodgy-looking contactless shopping spree, they'll make you use the PIN.

Its about time they pulled their finger out. I have one `card` that resides on my phone SIM that i can pay for everything from the subway to the weekly shop with. Its all the same technology as Oyster so no reason TFL couldnt do it too.
