Yes...that's about right in my opinion. The standards in all aspects of daily life and morality are falling year on year.

Perhaps he'd like to look at Lisbon with its Victorian Poverty. He decries our well known drinking culture, check out the open sex trade in your own capital that'd shame soho. We all have our ups and downs, he obviously hasn't learnt British tolerance.

He was wearing blinkers I think when writing the article .....everyone thinks there country is above things like he illustrated in his book ...there is plenty of it about

I feel sorry for us. Our nation has become like the girl who knows the cost of everything & the value of nowt, but we've been insidiously sold this idea & have nothing to show for it.

The Portugese are quite religious, the girls are very strict, that's why the lads fly off to Brazil to sow their oats.
I've been to Lisbon and Oporto a couple of times at least, not the cleanest places and like most big cities has it's share of the vice trade, and no I didn't.

From his last quote, it looks like his book was more tongue in cheek with grains of truth than anything else. Not like the media to stir it up is it!
I agree with him about our drinking culture though, it's embarrassing, disturbing and occasionally frightening in equal measure.

He is taking stereo types from university culture and applying them to a nation (for comic effect to be fair). I don't know a single person who drinks 12 pints a night. But I do know a few who will polish off two bottles of Sancerre.

If anybody has been watching the series 'twin towns' a recent one had a scosue family swapping with a yank family from New Orleans, the girls from the scouse family were embarrasing, 17 year old girl twins, not an ounce of common sense and sounded thick as fook on any subject, the young American girl quickly picked up on the 'scousebrow' which they then highlighted on the show. It wasn't a good advert for our younger generation to be shown in.

but of course all of our teenagers in the heydays of shagging everything that feckin moved whilst high on anything that they could get their hands on as long as it had the prefix "Il" before the word legal in the 60s were all different eh??? and the large groups of men that used to meet up at piers by the seaside for no other reason than to slice each other up with stanley knives because of them having a different music taste....... life is no different now to how it's been for decades...as my parents once said "We've ALL done binge drinking, had promiscuous sex and acted in dishonourable ways when we were the same age but back then it was simply called "The weekend"!! some of you are sounding very old and starting to take that "Would never have happened in my day" stance when in actual fact it would have and did, it's just that back then you didn't have the internet, facebook and fucking twitter to highlight EVERY tiny little thing that happened. oh and northwich, i "knew" quite a few Portuguese girls when i was at University in Hamburg.....believe me, as soon as they get away from prying eyes in their own country then they become far far less strict than they may be at home
