Let's get this inevitable thread started....team I'd like to think Hughes will go with....Bego, Bardsley, Wilson, Shawcross, Pieters, Arnie, Whelan, Nzonzi, Moses, Crouch, Diouf. What do you reckon? Completely mental not playing Arnie today imo. Even more mental not using either him or Adam off the bench.

Is 4-2-3-1 our best formation?
Not really sure it is. The manager is like a dog with two dicks at the moment with his attacking options.
Begovic Bards Wilson Ryan Ecka Whelan N'Zonzi Adam Marko Diouf Moses
4-3-3

Begovic Bardsley Shawcross Huth Pieters Sidwell (where was he today?) Whelan N'Zonzi Diouf Crouch Moses Good point where was Sidwelll? I get the feeling that Ireland may be returning to the squad next week too. Same starting 11? Possibly A very frustrating game of football for all Stoke fans - we need to keep the faith !

I'd play Moses centrally behind Diouf with Arnie and Assaidi flanking them.
The dilemma then is do we start with Adam in midfield alongside N'zonzi or Whelan?
Bego Bardsley, Huth, Shawcross, Pieters Whelan, N'Zonzi Arnie, Moses, Assaidi Diouf
Works as a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-1-1 which seem to be Hughes' two preferred formation options.
Odemwingie is a huge loss for us.

I think Assaidi will get the nod over Arnie which I dont want. i hope assaidi gets the nod. He's our most effective winger by a country mile and I just can't understand why there are people on this board who slag him off

Bring HUTH in so we have a threat at corners at least. And time to give Muniesa a chance - Pieters hasnt helped his winger out at all in the first games
Begovic
Bardsley Shawcross Huth Muniesa
Nzonzi Whelan Adam
Moses Diouf Arnautovic/Assaidi

He's lively and a threat but less so than Moses on that front I'd argue. He's not really a creator either. I'd start with Moses and Arnie. I'd have started with them yesterday.

I agree he is a goal threat though. I find it incredible that most would have Assaidi over Arnie, I know its all about opinion but when on form I dont think we have a better wide man than him.

I think the six from the back pick themselves so far as we have been pretty solid defensively so this is what I would go for!

I don't think 4-2-3-1 suits the players we've got, both Crouch and Diouf prefer to play and are more effective when played in a front '2'.
I'd play Liverpool's system, a 4-3-1-2 diamond, with Moses playing the 'Sterling' role, having licence to roam - being able to turn up on either flank at will.
Begovic
Bardsley Shawcross Wilson Pieters
Whelan N'Zonzi Adam
Moses
Crouch Diouf

Football managers are pragmatic souls. Dont think for a minute that he will stray far from the line-up that did the job at Man City.

bego bardsley shawcross wilson muniesa whelan nzonzi diouf ireland moses crouch
bench: sorenson, huth, sidwell, adam, arnie, assaidi, walters
if pieters is healthy, then he starts ahead of muniesa, and muniesa takes one of arnie, assaidi, or walters' spot on the bench. if ireland isn't ready, diouf moves to the middle and hughes probably replaces him with walters. he could include bojan instead of one of the other attacking players on the bench, but I don't know who he'd drop, maybe arnie as he seems to be out of favor.
