I used to get all my gear from next doors eldest when he out grew his clothes. Occasionally I would get clothing vouchers from the social for special occasions like the death of my step father. These vouchers could be redeemed at Taylor's 'supermarket' near to the roundabout in Tunstall. I always used to think that Ben Sherman was a type of tank and never realised that there were kids who bought clothes for specific labels or designs. I seemed to bypass all this fashion fascination more as a result of financial circumstance than anything else. I can't say vanity has ever been an important part of life at all to be honest. I found food to be a greater priority...

Most of my t-shirts come from running races where they give you a cotton tee at the end. Got flipping loads of them so no point buying others.
Much prefer shorts to trousers - wear all winter except at work, usually Austin Reed.

No it wasn't much fun at all. I used have to go through the indignity of waiting for my food vouchers outside the headmasters office every Monday too. It was akin to having a Jewish Star of David pinned to your chest or being accused of being a queer . It's something that you never forget , unless of course your daddy was a car dealer and then such matters become a much maligned joke. I learned a lot about life very early on.

Comparing your childhood to that of being a Jew in Nazi Germany or a victim of homophobia suggests to me that you didn't learn as much as you probably think Mumf. You don't half put your foot in your mouth at times...

First up best dressed etc. My mum made all my trousers and shirts {she was an accomplished seamstress}, and my nan knitted all the jumpers. Oxford bags with massive patch pockets. I had a fantastic Parka with rabbit fur lined hood. I never had a pair of jeans until I was about sixteen. This thread made me think about a great black leather double breasted army surplus German army coat I had - I can't recall what happened to it, I can't imagine I wore it out. Possibly the casualty of a house move. I graduated from home made stuff to jumble sale jackets, Chino's and shirts from Trilby. I'm still largely a poster boy for 'the man from Sue Ryder'. I've never been bothered by Labels. Never recycled under garments or shoes though. I have some standards.

When I was a kid it was mainly what Chawners sold, we usually used Shopacheck vouchers and that was one of the few places that took them, some stuff also came from Stoke market.
Nowadays I like Weird Fish jumpers and jackets, Next jeans (mainly) and Rockport shoes.
