Beatles obviously had the most hits, but for me Led Zeppelin are the only band who never made a bad song and are therefore the best.

The Beatles stand head and shoulders above anyone for me followed by The Jam and Queen but a lot of good bands mentioned in this thread.

The Fall.
No one can touch them.
Mark E Smith is still as angry as ever.
The only band I've been listening to since 1980 when I first heard 'Container Drivers' who haven't sold out and gone mainstream.
First formed in 1975..everything they've ever done is quality. And live..they are outstanding. Smith no longer jumps into the crowd sorting out hecklers but they are still great to see.

For me it's Queen. Then in no particular order Santana. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Erasure, Communards, Beatles, ELO, Dire Straits, Chris Rea, Moody Blues, most Motown, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart and Bananarama.

If the Beatles were around today they would be a pop band, summit along the lines of one direction, therefore I don't like them. (you can all slag me off now)

This is easy. If we are talking bands...big bands...
It has to be Duke Ellington.
