The Vulcan flew overhead on my way the the shops the other day. That's one advantage of living in the Lincoln area for aviation nuts like me: Free air displays from Red Arrows practising their gigs, regular flypasts from Spitfires, Hurricanes, Dakotas, Lancasters, etc., even exotics like the Swordfish and Gladiator, or Yank types like B-17s. Waddington Air Show weekend in July is like a feast of plenty. One thing, though, you can always tell the sound of a RR Merlin engine, even before you see the Spitfire or Hurricane it's powering.
Every Xmas day, my mate who is a winchman on an ASR helicopter, circles low around the village to wave at us all. Bloody noisy - spoils my sprouts.

Yes you are a lucky chap in the respect of where you live mate ......nothing like the sound of a Merlin is there ? The later Spits powered by the Griffon never have quite the same effect on the senses for me , sentiment I suppose will always associate the Spitfire with the Merlin.....the Griffon is a totally different sound.

Theres a Merlin or two in the S-O-T area that get taken to various shows. Standing next to them is an experience when theyre spitting flames from the exhausts.
