Just seen the new British prison film 'Starred Up' and was disappointed if truth be told, especially as I like a good prison flick. My favourites: The Shawshank Redemption: The prison film by which all others in the genre will be measured. Great leading roles by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, although there is one huge plot hole-do you know what it is? Scum: The 'daddy' of UK prison/angry youth movies, we have more familiar British acting faces than we can shake a stick at, snooker balls in socks and, er...that potting shed scene Where's yer tool? Escape From Alcatraz: Clint Eastwood doesn't need movie posters and sewage pipes full of shit to escape, he uses a dummy head. Lock-Up: A harmless bit of Stallone cheese, it's Shawshank on steroids. Just ignore the contrived plot points and it's not too bad. Any I've left out (before anyone says Green Mile, I've only seen it once, years ago, and I've forgotten most of it).

The Green Mile with Michael Clarke Duncan and Tom Hanks is a good watch, also the last castle is okay with Robert Redfern and James Gandolfini about a u.s military prison. Another good one was cool hand Luke "shaking the bush boss"

Prison Break the tv series was good for the first 2 series.
Escape from Alcatraz is a great film though. Also liked the Birdman of Alcatraz with Burt Lancaster.
Only recently seen the Shawshank film and it was very good. Not sure what the plot hole was though. Will have to watch it again. Maybe where did all the dirt go?

Law abiding citizen. What a film not so much about prison itself but is mainly filmed in a prison. If you have not seen it download it now and watch it.

Cool hand Luke is one of my favourite films ever. The longest yard is quite good in a cheesy, American way.

Midnight Express Fucking hell! Oh Yeah, Based on a true story & the soundtrack is by Giorgio Moroder of Donna Summers I Feel Love fame. If I'm not mistaken, the Midnight Express was the train that the adjoining countries border guards used to send drug smugglers back into Turkey under cover of dark, so they wouldn't be treated harshly by the authorities.
