www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/rugby-player-who-swallowed-four-4072576First off i don't condone what this guy did, but ffs to be dragged through the courts with the threat of jail and hung out to dry by the media for a childish prank is just ridiculous. RSPCA claiming THIS IS cruelty to ANIMALS! It's ok for restaurants to Boil LIVE lobsters and crabs to death. Freeze millions of cod haddock etc to death everyday. Fishermen to hook trout and bash it to death prior to eating!

I don't wish to pour cold water on this particular thread but it does seem to be a waste of RSPCA valuable resources and costs. The problem for me is when intelligent domesticated animals are cruelly mistreated and more often than not their case never makes it to court. This mistreatment covers a broad cross section of society but inevitably and predominately normally occurs in the poor echelons of society . You may all be surprised to learn that in many instances it is elderly pensioners that inflict more suffering on their pets as a result of lack of sound judgement , immobility , over feeding , failing to recognise ill health or suffering from a particular condition and a whole host of other scenarios. Due to their inability to cope the vast majority of cruelty cases never make it to court as a result of their state of mind or lack of intent to cause suffering. I would say that in my experience the cases I have seen in which animals have suffered at the hands of their owners has been mainly elderly people who have been oblivious to their actions and in many cases their animals have had to be destroyed as a result. It's very sad for the pet and sad for the owner.

Yeah slightly off topic mumf, but still making a very good point regarding a waste of RSPCA valuable resources, the money used against the guy in question could have been used where it matters most.

I quite agree. The RSPCA does some excellent work in fighting animal cruelty but this is a classic example of where it sadly has got it horribly wrong . If it's intention was to highlight to what lengths it will go to pursue animal cruelty then i think it it has shot itself in the foot by the amount of money it has cost to pursue this matter through the courts.

Because its not me making those rules people flush live goldfish down the loo all the time (wrongly assuming they're dead because they're on their side or upside down etc. which is usually just a swim bladder issue), accidentally poach them by turning their thermo up by mistake etc. but the RSPCA don't bang down their doors and ban them from keeping pets it's all a bit daft is you ask me

Any honest angler will tell you that hundreds die accidentally after getting caught in keep nets . I think I read that in medieval times that they were baked in pies too.

The 4 tiddlers perished basically the same way. Now i'm not sticking up for the guy in question, i just can not understand why he has been dragged through the courts wasting thousands of pounds of the RSPCA's funds over this. The vast majority public opinion of this case seems to think the same. Their are far worse cases of animal cruelty that goes on everyday that just gets put to one side.
