I worry about this because he deserved to be subbed...and wasn't. Bit of a favourite is Ireland and that's not a comfortable situation. Agreed. Was very surprised when he took Whelan off. Ireland had a nightmare.

Thought he had a mare...so weak at times and does not react to whet is going on around him which winds me up!
He's better than that though as many others were after yesterday's No show!
Must do better.

He's a good player but tends to switch off. We did get him on a free mind you so no real point in complaining too much.

He drifts out of games very easily and becomes ineffective. I can see that hes there to link up the midfield play to the forwards, but frankly we needed someone in that position who could have driven at the opposition and do something different, so I was amazed that he wasn't subbed for Adam earlier in the game.

He was awful awful awful , without doubt the most bewildering decision by this management team is their persistence with Ireland . Giving him a contract even more so . Adam scores , battles and assists Ireland yesterday played for 20 minutes as usual and then went hopelessly missing .not strong enough , doesntmake or score and certainly we cant afford him and bojan in the same team . Would actually prefer Walters in the hole which is his best position than Ireland For me he would be be a very very lucky boy to make the bench next week . I agree that Ireland was, for the most part, anonymous against Villa and I would consider a change in this position, but this utter shit about not being strong enough does my box in. He's an attacking midfielder for god's sake. I won't waste my time naming the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, let alone Europe...you can look them up yourself and find out what kind of physiques they have.

Some of you wouldn't know a good player if he kicked you in the bollocks. And some of you need it.

Ireland's a very good player makes us tick on an attacking front

I'd go with
Bojan Assaidi - Ireland - Arnautovic

In fairness as pleasing to watch as we were tonight I felt Ireland was easily our weakest player tonight. Just didn't get involved at all. Bottled countless challenges and created next to nothing:

Ireland was absolutely useless tonight. He didn't deserve to be on the pitch. In fact, the way he played, he didn't deserve to be on the bench!

More than chuffed with the result...still allowed an opinion on a player though, just dunner think he offers much and didn't tonight. If you check the match thread you'll see a lot of negative comments on Arnie, and Ossie, I dunner tend to agree, but hey that's football, all about opinions....that's what message boards are about, let's agree to disagree without getting personal. I am wank by the way...still better than Ireland though

That's why football is such an amazing game. Always surprising what ppl see. Not his best game in a stoke shirt but showed some nice passing and speed of thought. Tired as you would expect from someone who hadn't played in a while esp given it's so early in a season.
"The first half served as a reminder of precisely what a clever footballer Ireland is. Stoke’s attacking midfielder, recalled after injury, was invariably at the heart of the game’s best moves but it was Sunderland who took the lead" quote from the guardian

I'm a big fan of Ireland but wouldn't be gutted if we sold him. Too much competition for one spot

Particularly given I can remember clearly our best moves and they were practically all down our left hand side with Assaidi and Muniesa. Even a horribly out of form Arnie was offering more than Ireland tonight.

Seriously, I agree that he was pretty decent in the first half but clearly tired very quickly. He IS a clever footballer IMO and an asset to the squad. We've got some good footballers at the club right now and (IMO) he's one of them.

Yes, even Arnie, who I agree is a shadow of himself, played better than Ireland tonight. Ireland's "tackles" were a sight to see, reminded me of a 6 year old kid who knows he's supposed to chase after where the ball is, but doesn't know what to do if he gets close to it.

I'm not sold on Ireland if I'm honest but his runs from deep will be valuable in our home games when trying open teams up

Maybe I'm just inclined to cut the players a little more slack given circumstances and the fact we are through
