I'm used to seeing glimpses of Pipistrelles zipping about after moths and mozzies around the outside light. I once went into a Devon churchyard on a bat tour {by accident}. The guide had a bat detector which made their ultra sonic noises audible to the human ear. They made clicks and squeeks, and blew raspberries when they caught summat. The church was in darkness, so we didn't see much. The guide reckoned he could differentiate between the species by the frequencies. (He may well have had a cassette tape in the 'Bat Detector.}
Yesterday evening whilst doing a bit of angling on the Cauldon cut, at about 8 o'clock just before dusk, an unusual bat flew past. No more than 12ft away, 3ft above the surface of the canal. It had a slow deliberate flight, slow wing beats, almost fluttering, barge speed {approx. 4mph}. A bit like those crappy bats on elastic in the final scenes of Dracula. About 6inch wingspan, a black bat with grey tips to the fur, frosted. It took a swooping arc to ground level, landed next to the freshwater stream running parallel with the cut. It emerged a few minutes later and retraced it's flightpath. Did this three times {Don't think it was three individuals}.
I've google British bats, fascinating creatures with crazy faces. The amount of mozzies per night they clear out is phenomenal. There only seems to be 18 Brit bats, most of them rare and protected and confined to the south. I suppose it's a bit of a shitter if you get colonised. I can't decide what I {and two mates} have seen: The behaviour of a Daubenton's {water bat}, the flight of a Greater Horseshoe, the colouring and size of a Barbastrelle.
Any batfolk got any thoughts on what species it was? Or any bat sightings/facts.

I don't know mate , but try and narrow it down...
Look at habitat , look at the geography , look at the age of the trees and where they are likely to roost.
You could make it even easier and contact one of the bat societies explaining the details and circumstances of your sighting.
I'm sure that they would be glad of your input.

Yeah will contact the Bat Boffins, but I'm stalling because I can envisage another 'project' coming on. There's talk of 'you can help to monitor' these bats on their webpage. I'm already contemplating building a few bat boxes. I thought there may have been a few nature bods or fisherfolk who could have had similar sightings in this warm spell. I've discussed it with fellow miscreants,boozers and loiterers, but bats are elusive, you rarely get more than a glimpse, understandably most people don't distinguish between species, just say 'I've seen a bat.' I was the same until I saw this, which was so different. "Was it the mention of Barbastrelle that got you veering into the 'shaggable Owd Uns' thread quicker than Jane Fonda on a gym mat?

Now then...Ermm....I have been known to loiter with intent and Jane Fonda does spring to mind 'barbastrelle' but I am easily led...
Given the choice between a night prowling around Delamere forest identifying old uns or 3 hours with Linda Lusardi in the Forest Hills studying her nipples , then which would you choose...?
Ooooerrrrrr.

Can they see with eyes? Or only by sense of radar smell? I think they can see quite well in daylight , but at night they emit a high pitched scream which can only be picked up by other bars ....they guide themselves by homing in on the sound waves ....I think that's right anyway ?

I use to like Harrow when I was a teenager, but now I prefer short handled.
Have to say that I disagree with the OP - they're useless for getting rid of mozzies.
