As i type this i am sitting in the square in front of the Cathedral in Valencia. Its pretty quiet to be honest. A Saturday night here in August is nothing like a Saturday night in the UK. i am expecting it to liven up after 9pm when most of the bars and restaurants get going but it is no Madrid/Barcelona by the looks of things. Nice city though..very relaxed. Valencia is one of the poorest areas of Spain. They can't afford do it like Madrid/Barca. Train stn is impressive. Bigger than Stokes!!!

Well, I went for a stroll for a few hours and came back into the Cathedral Square and all is good. People are queuing for a restaurant table at 11pm. I can't believe the number of fit women knocking around. It's not just the Spanish, there are a fair number of young Northern Europeans and Russkis out and about. Shame, I am out with the wife (...and fast approaching 50) but, hey, it makes a change from looking at 16th century architecture. Northwich - this is my 1st time in Valencia and I am only here for a few days so can't really help. I travel quite a bit and always use booking.com for apartments and hotels. They have never let me down ever...very reliable and easy to use website. Prices are competitive.

Not seen the train station but will have a look tomorrow. I quite like the fact that they diverted a 200m wide river around to the south of the city and turned the old river bed into a sunken green park which stretches for 5 miles through the city. Uncle Peter struggled to solve the problem of the 5m wide R. Trent and the Loop Line regeneration and the Forest Park are not quite the same green lung as Valencia's River Tulia project. We need to think a little bigger in S-o-T. From my recent visit there does seem to be some signs of regeneration and joined up thinking in Stoke. Just realized my last para is wondering off topic. Don't want to hijack this thread.

Did Istanbul but working for the other Europa away games - we (8) all had a great time & I thought the Stokies did a top job, except the fella who was completely off his head, couldn't walk & never made it past the queue to get into the ground. Conna wait for the chance to get back into another Europe trip - Paris St Germain please? Yeah we were in the queue when that bloke was trying to get in, absolutely off his head and unable to receive the help everyone was trying to give him. We saw him after the game once he'd calmed down abit, nice bloke actually he'd just taken the Istanbul experience a little far with some local stuff...the police did a nice job helping him out the ground with their truncheons, his ribs black and blue

I didn't get to any of the other European away days unfortunately mate, so I have no yardstick for comparison. I've heard other fans say some of the other matches were their favourite but the Valencia game was our day in the sun, so to speak, for me and my lot. Absolutely brilliant day. I did Hajduk Split and Valencia and they were both fantastic experiences in different ways. Less of us in Split but what an intense atmosphere! I took my two sons to Valencia with me and it was great to be part of an enormous band of brothers there too! Let's hope for more of the same......soon Hey Mr Jon, word on the street is that you were the top boy in Croatia....

Mistaken identity, but the riot police were convinced they'd got the right guy, judging by their "hospitality" towards me

Don't want to hijack this thread. It livens up after 11pm. Just spent last Sunday to Wednesday in Valencia with PontyParty (a Talksport jolly) and had a ball. Try the beach bar on Malvarossa beach (adjacent to volleyball courts) followed by some Salsa and mojitos at Bar Akurela (across the road). The Hemisphere, Oceanagraphica etc. are all open until midnight and well worth a visit, as is the Mestalla Forever stadium tour. A Valencia Tourist Card (24/48/72 hours) gets you free bus and metro travel, plus a discount voucher book (applicable to these and many more attractions). The Plaza de la virgem square (behind the cathedral) is good for cheap bars, tapa and paella. I love the place : it's mega !????

Register with www.topcashback.co.uk a website based in Uttoxeter which gives cash back on internet bookings; it's a free to register search portal, which gives cash back on everything from Argos to Zaavi. I used it to find scheduled flights EMA to VAL, airport parking, Post Office travel insurance, Booking.com hotel accommodation etc. Buy the Valencia tourist card at the Val airport tourist information desk, and use the metro to get into the city (Xatavia is main interchange by Renfe Rail station/Bullring and McDonalds). Buses run on a circular route and the card works on these too. Breakfast in hotels is cheaper paying there than prebooking. I stayed at Beatriz Rey Don Jaime, 111 euros for 3 nights, twin room with ensuite, and paid 4.5 euros per day for light breakfast (oj, coffee, toast, croissants). Enjoy !

If you check the Hotel websites on Topcashback, such as hotels.com, booking.com, expedia.com etc. You should get a better deal.
Hotel Beatriz is across the street from Holiday Inn and gave a much cheaper price; it has a rooftop pool and free WiFi (in the lobby) too.
The Valencia card is a one per person bus/metro pass, but the 24/48/72 hour only starts when you board the first mode of travel, so it's a great go anywhere pass.
Enjoy !

Try www.friendlyrentals.com which is a good site for self-catering accommodation. For transport, if you dont mind a stroll then I would just buy tix into the centre on the metro and take it from there. If you fancy a day at the beach, you can either hop on the metro again, or if feeling a little active do like we did and hire a bike (loads of places to choose from) and ride down the old river bed to the coast. Not too far and very flat.
