www.chroniclelive.co.uk/nufc/2008/04/29/united-bank-on-stoke-success-72703-20835361/Newcastle Evening Chronicle United bank on Stoke success
Apr 29 2008 by Alan Oliver, Evening Chronicle
NEWCASTLE United are banking on Stoke City being promoted to the Premier League – so they can cash in on Shola Ameobi.
For, as seems likely, if Stoke join West Brom in one of the automatic promotion places from the Championship on Sunday, then United will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Stoke want to keep the details of Ameobi’s loan deal secret – and it’s easy to see why.
For the top brass of Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez have done United proud in their dealings with the Midlands club.
United have already banked a huge fee of £575,000 for allowing Ameobi to go to the Britannia Stadium on loan, with the player himself picking up a weekly wage packet of £20,000.
And a deal has already been struck between the two clubs that if Stoke are promoted then Ameobi’s loan deal will become permanent, with United receiving a cool £4m for the player who cost them nothing after he came through the ranks at St James’s Park.
Several other clubs in the Championship were interested in Ameobi, but none could match Stoke’s offer to United.
Ameobi has had his ups and downs on Tyneside, but it should not be forgotten that he scored nearly 50 goals for the club – some of them very crucial.
But he is being married in the summer, and the word is that Kevin Keegan was understandably upset when the 26-year-old striker asked to miss a reserve game because he had a wedding rehearsal.
Whatever happens, it’s hard to see Ameobi having any sort of future with United, and it would be a surprise if David Rozehnal, who is on loan at Lazio, was seen in a black-and-white shirt again.

I thought we could back out of the deal if we wanted?
But this guy is pretty well-connected, and he seems to think promotion is effectively an automatic trigger on the deal?
If the figures are right, looks like Glenn Rodent wasn't exactly a million miles wide of the mark.
He was also completely vindicated about his complete lack of match fitness too.

The guy looks like Pericard, if he can't get in the tea ahead of Fuller & Sidibe what the heck is the point in signing him?
I can't believe we have already paid over 500k for him!!!!! Anything more would be a big waste!

An incredibly Naïve deal from Pulis and Scholes if true. Then again, you don't get a player with over 50 prem goals for 10 bob these days.

If that's true, Rodent seems to have been bang-on?
"He's had a really nasty hip operation and to be gambling £5 million - and I don't know the deal exactly - but if that's a guaranteed £5 million, that's some gamble that Pulis has taken on someone who has seemed to have recovered from major surgery on his hip.
"And it hasn't really yet been tested because he's wasted a year. The two managers that Newcastle have had this year have chosen not to use him. So knowing Shola like I do, he'll be amazingly unfit as well. He takes a bit of getting fit.
"So Stoke have got a short period of time to get the best out of him; out of a Shola Ameobi that will be nowhere near match-fit. And if Dennis is telling the truth, you'd be shocked at how much they're paying."
“Newcastle are up to their necks in it,” said Roeder today ahead of the trip to Sheffield United on Saturday. “He hasn't had any match practice and he hasn't played this year.
“Knowing Shola like I do he would probably take a month to get match fit, and that's too late.
“But I like him a lot. He would be an unbelievable goal scorer in the Championship.”
When asked whether he might consider a move for the Nigerian forward at a later date, Roeder replied: “Who knows.
“But I just opened my hands there - I think he's a fantastic player, certainly rated much more highly by me than lots of other people who tend to like headless chickens running round the place who don't score.
“He scores goals.”

Hmm, whilst I will not criticise Ameobi as he wears the red and white I will say that he is definately not worth £4m. No way, I do hope Coatesy isn't actually gonna pay that. You could get a lot better striker for that sort of cash. Zamora, Harewood, Kamara, that much money for a half fit striker who hasn't really added to much to what we already have seems excessive.
Perhaps when Ameobi is fully fit we may see a better player, the jury is still out. Mama and Riccy are far more effective as a front two. Ahh well in Peter and Tone we trust

- WELL looks like we are stuck with him -
hopefully,& how many times do we say this about players,he will have a good pre-season & show what he can do rather than the lame efforts we have been treated to so far
hopefully he wont be the No 1 striker either.
if Shola & Ameobi are our reserve strikers things could be looking good! if thats our front two we have a problem, imho -

It's probably a bit unfair to judge him on his time with us, he's clearly not match fit, i think he has a lot more to offer than what we've seen so far, if he gets himself fit over the summer he might do a job, and 4 mil isn't a lot of money these days is it ?

He's out of contract next summer too.
These kind of sums just sound bonkers in the circumstances, but I suppose you can start sticking zeros on when you start dealing with Premier teams with a semi-proven player.

Getting outfoxed by Dennis Wise is like losing a game of trivial pursuit to Jade Goody.

He got 50 goals for Newcastle, so he must have something. Perhaps with a full pre season behind him, he might come good. At the moment, 4 million seems about 3 million too much, but if he gets the winner on Sunday he'll be worth every penny ;D

I find it unbelievable how some people posting on this board can write off or slate a player having only seen him play for us for a handful of minutes. Give the player, and Pulis' judgement a chance - it is completely daft to judge Ameobi's ability at this point, and whether or not 4 million will be a good fee or not should we go up. Furthermore, despite perhaps arguing that Pulis shouldn't have paid so much for the loan when Ameobi was clearly not match fit, I think there are other factors to the signing such as putting pressure on the other forward players with a big name (relatively) premiership player. Mama has had a good season, but looked even better since Ameobi's arrival I think and Ric looks sharp again...

Hmm, I'm in a mood to trust Tone's judgement pretty big time at the moment, I'm sure he's seen something he can work with over time, and you can't say Ameobi hasn't shown his quality in the past. And don't forget TP's best players tend to be the ones he's rescued and/or moulded to his way of doing it. But bloody hell that's a lot of money, I hope not more than half is up front.

Also, I can't help feeling sad for Mama, who's probably on a quarter of that every week and has sweated blood for us during the run-in and done what many people were thinking was Shola's job.
(I seriously bet that when we're mid-table in the Prem next season... hopefully... Mama will still be up there doing exactly the same job and dividing us fans in exactly the same way...)

It's wrong to judge Shola already. He's played one full game then went off injured early into his 2nd match. You need to judge him over a longer term.
His record for Newcastle isn't amazing but he's still scored 50 odd goals and that's not bad for a player in and out of the team.
Yes, the inital reaction is that 4mill is a bit steep but if he gets himself fit and starts finding the back of the net then we will all quickly change our minds i'm sure.
Footy is very fickle at times. Lets give it time.

Could this be another one of Tone's inspired signings, like Ricci and Liam? He clearly isn't fit, but they've obviously had time to have a look at him. He fits the bill for us, big, fast(ish) and strong, looks OK in the air (on YouTube!). He's got a decent scoring record at the top level too, which could be the difference between staying up and going down.
Get him fit, playing in a system that suits him, build his confidence and he could be a superb acquisition. Don't judge him on what we've seen so far.

He's out of contract next summer????? 4-5 million????? Oh dear.
Surely he is worth 1m max?????????
4-5 million Ameobi is a joke, Jermaine De Foe only went for 7m.
Surely we can't be this crazy, credit to Coates, he has put his money where his mouth is!
