I know that many have included their preferred 11 (including formation and shape) in other threads but I cannot find where there is a thread solely concentrating on the issue. For what it's worth mine would be:
Bego
Bardsley Shawcross Muniesa Pieters
Nzonzi Sidwell Whelan
Bojan Arnie Diouf
What pleases me most is seeing the quality of the players that would be left out in the above 11, those who contributed so much to our success last year such as Wingie, Cameron, Wilson and Assaidi (if he signs up) and not forgetting the returning Huth. I feel that there are variations on the above that I would still be more than happy to see and that our depth is the greatest it has been in the Premier League years.

The midfield 3 is quite defensive there, and you'd have to throw Ireland into the mix perhaps, if his pre-season form continues. Then Odemwingie played well for us last season, so real competition now.

It's rayt good looking forward to a season where the starting XI has elements of unpredictability. A team with genuine competition for places, and a management team with the technical and tactical nouse to set up in a way to exploit the vulnerabilities of the opposition. I also feel extremely positive about the new flexibility of the attack, less of a regimented approach to positioning. And the flexibility to mix up the formation and make changes even during the 90. There's still time for us to lose some players and maybe gain a few. As with other teams, including Villa. We havn't started to exploit the loan market, last season that was quite fruitful {Guidetti aside}, so I'd be surprised if we didn't dabble again. Nevertheless if we were playing Villa this weekend, these are my thoughts.
I'm yet to be fully won over by Ireland, though it seems he's shown better form in these friendlies, Hughes loves him, and you'd think Steven would like to stick one up the Villa. {Unless the non-playing clause was ad infinitum!} So I'd set up to accommodate him. I expect to see a slow/phased introduction for Bojan, cameos until Xmas. I fear with Ireland and Bojan playing through the middle teams with a more physical midfield will muscle us out. We'll see. I don't think that applies to Villa, and I'm presuming Benteke won't feature. I'm currently undecided about Bardsley, I havn't seen enough yet to convince me that he'll usurp Geoff. So I'd go.
---------Begovic--------- Cameron Shawcross Muniesa ----------Whelan---------- -------N'Zonzi Ireland---- Odemwingie Crouch Arnautovic -----------Diouf-----------
Loads of scope for changes from the bench.. With Bojan for Crouch, Diouf or Ireland. Sidwell or Adam for Ireland. Bardsley/Wilson for Cameron... or drop Pieters or Huth in.. I even liked the hunger of Walters when he came back at the end of the season.
Truly exciting times.

I'd really like to see Muniesa given a run at centre half with Shawcross but I don't think he will.
Bego
Bardsley-Shawcross-Wilson-Pieters
Whelan - NZonzi
Arnie - Ireland - Assaidi
Diouf
Sorro, Huth, Cameron, Muniesa, Sidwell, Bojan, Odemwingie.
I'd be looking at moving Walters (or Crouch) on, and Adam, as well as the other obvious ones

Begovic Bardsley Shawcross Huth Pieters Whelan N'Zonzi Odem Ireland Arnie Diouf. This. But I'd have Cameron start instead of Bardsley at the beginning of the year. Its been said before, with all the new members of Stoke, continuity is important.

It is not possible to have a starting eleven. I've tried and tried and it isn't possible. We need special dispensation from the FA so we can have a stating thirteen.

Begovic Cameron-Shawcross-Huth-Muniesa Ireland-Adam-Arnautovic Odemwingie-Diouf-Bojan Cripes Musik, you're not giving the defence much protection there. Lots of goal threat but I fear we would be totally overrun in midfield

The fun bit is having picked your first XI, looking at the strength in the second
Begovic Bardsley, Huth, Shawcross, Pieters N Zonzi, Whelan, Sidwell Arnie, Diouf, Bojan
Sorenson/Butland Wilkinson, Cameron, Wilson, Muniesa Palacios, Adam, Ireland Odemwingie, Crouch, Walters
I would be pretty happy with that 2nd XI BTW - I'm not opining that Sidwell is better than Adam etc etc, just illustrating the real strength in depth, with genuine competition in all positions (espec given Wilson and Cameron are particularly versatile.
Be very surprised if this 23 aren't the premiership squad 23, unless we ship out and bring in to replace Wilkinson, Palacios (seems unlikely) and Crouch/Walters

He definitely should. I would prefer Bojan, Diouf, Arni and Ireland in the offensive...it looked good sometimes gainst Schalke....but who plays on the right wing?? Diouf and Bojan are centre forwards, Arni is better on the left wing and Ireland is perfect on Number 10 position

Too many people are picking the wrong players. Last season our best players consistency wise were Asmir Begovic, Ryan Shawcross & Glenn Whelan. So they have to go, i'm sorry. They all have to go, out through the in door i'd suggest. You simply cannot be playing your best players, it just doesn't work at all. Begovic...no, Shawcross...no, Whelan...no. Arnautovic can leave as well. I know i've said sorry but i actually make no apologies for this, you cannot expect to carry on from your most succesful league season in nearly 40 years by playing the likes of Begovic, Shawcross and Whelan. It will have a detrimental effect on the team. So i'd say Bachmann deserves his chance, Shea is tall, so that's Shawcross ousted and as for Whelan, i mean where do you start? Anyone to replace him i'd say. Very nearly ruined our chances last season by being alive. Get rid. So my team... Felix Carlos Alberto (c) Brito Piazza Everaldo Clodoaldo Gérson Jairzinho Tostão Pele Rivelino

I don't think we should start the season with too many changes from the team that ended the season! We had a very good run after Christmas so therefore my team would be like this (at least if we don't bring in somebody awsome). ...................Bego............... Bardsley..Shawcross...Wilson...Pieters ........N'Zonzi...........Whelan...... Odemwingie.......Ireland.........Arnie ..................Diouf...............
Subs (a pick between these): Sorro, Huth, Cameron, Muniesa, Texeira, Sidwell, Adam, Walters, Crouch.(Butland (loan out), Wilko (loan out), Shotton (offload), Shea (offload), Jerome (offload), Palacios (offload).
