Didn't dislike them too much in the 60s under Sir Matt Busby. So was wondering, when did we first start calling them the Shit?

I started supporting Stoke around 63/64, used to go with my Grandad at first, I started knocking about with lads my own age at the match and going on my own around 67 - 68ish, they were referred to as The Shit back then, certainly by about 1970ish I distinctly remember that in my circle of football mates they were the Shit. And for me they still are.

If it wasn't before, it certainly was when they took Jimmy Greenhoff from us!

And for me they still are. Dave is usually close to the money on these matters. Certainly he trumps me. I first heard the phrase in 1978. A couple of us hitched down to Bristol Rovers away, and we were picked up by two blokes in their late 20s/early 30s - one of whom had a young son (maybe 8 or 9). A car passed us on the M5 with Man Utd scarves fluttering out of the window. One of the blokes turned his head to the back seat and very solemnly proclaimed to his boy: "S**t fans". I felt we had witnessed a moving rite of passage - and I am prepared to bet that 20 odd years later that boy offered the same words - a statement of utter certainty, an almost universal truth - to his own son. (Btw, a couple of my friends hitched separately to that match - and were picked up by the notorious van that stopped on the trip back in Worcester. That is another story - documented elsewhere on these pages I think).

In 1878 on a slag heap in Newton Heath a mongrel dog shat out the remains of his dinner of tripe. Eleven tapeworms wriggled around in the foul stench. This was Manchester United's first set of players.
They have always been the shit. They will always be the shit.

I can certainly remember them being called the shit in the mid to late 70's when I first started watching Stoke.

Who are the people? We are the people! Who are the Shit? They are the shit! I've always known them as that, 53 this year, and thought it was in the Stokie DNA to refer to them as that? I think it was taught in primary school history lessons!

1965 was my first game and as far as I can remember they have always been the shit. This is the same for all football clubs as far as I know the shit are the shit for all.

Is it only us or does everyone know them as the shit? One of my mates supports Liverpool and they call them the scum. He tried to negotiate on calling them the shitscum, but i've stood firm and told him its just 'the shit'. It might just be that he's a bit daft. He does have an extraordinarily large head in proportion to his body, and he's a right ugly bastard too. His last missus dumped him after 4 weeks coz she got bored of him, and as much as she wanted to see past his looks and find a decent, interesting guy, she just couldnt (on both grounds!). A bit of a caught and bowled with that if you wish

Is it only us or does everyone know them as the shit? It's just us. Man City call them "the rags", Liverpool "the scum" and the rest of the country pamper to their over inflated egos and call them 'United" like there is only one club with that name. Down here "the shit" means Bristol City. BM

We are supposed to look up to them as the biggest institution in sport so almost casually referring to them as 'the shit' works well for me.

I always thought it came out of them being commonly known as ManU which is almost like saying Manure I.e. Shit. No? Completely the opposite It was somebody averse to fowl language who decided to nickname them manure instead of the shit, which then got interpreted as Man U, which some muppets thought stood for Man Utd

For me early 1970's circa FA Cup semi finals. Mind you just a teenager then, so probably too naive to know earlier

For me i knew the shit as the shit in 1989 the first potteries derby since i was born. What a horrible season that was as well. Spent most of it in the bottom 3 and half of it in 24th place. It also started a decade of Vale being on par and often above us in league status.
