After Wilson failed his medical it started alarm bells in my head, just how many players do we have on the payroll now. It's all very well saying they're all part of the squad, but it's not like we're in Europe & need them for midweek night matches. The books must be far from balanced. Can anyone allay my fears!?!

I think we're about 12th in the wage table. However there is a lot of deadwood at the min and there needs to be a serious amount of shifting going on

28 according to wiki.
1 GK Asmir Begovi? 2 DF Phil Bardsley 3 DF Erik Pieters 4 DF Robert Huth 5 DF Marc Muniesa 6 MF Glenn Whelan 7 MF Stephen Ireland 8 MF Wilson Palacios 9 FW Peter Odemwingie 10 FW Marko Arnautovi? 11 MF Brek Shea 12 DF Marc Wilson 14 MF Jamie Ness 15 MF Steven N'Zonzi
16 MF Charlie Adam 17 DF Ryan Shawcross (captain) 18 FW Mame Biram Diouf 19 FW Jonathan Walters 20 DF Geoff Cameron 21 MF Steve Sidwell 22 GK Jack Butland 23 DF Dionatan Teixeira 25 FW Peter Crouch 27 FW Bojan Krki? 28 DF Andy Wilkinson 29 GK Thomas Sørensen
30 DF Ryan Shotton 33 FW Cameron Jerome
They're the only two I can definitely see leaving.
And then one of Crouch/Walters One of Wilson/Cameron Adam probably Palacios hopefully but probably not.

I'd say with the revenue we're doing ok but haven't got much breathing space with Palacios failing his medical. Finishing high certainly helped us though. This is how I see it Ins Tex - low fee low wages Bojan - low fee high wages but will earn us revenue shirt sales etc Sidwell - no fee med wages Bardsley - no fee med wages Diouf - no fee high wages Outs Ethers - med / high wages Lightly - fee / med wages Pennant - med wages Gudietti - I'd imagine a pretty decent wage contribution to Man C Assaidi - Decent contribution to Liverpool Edu - low / med wages I'm pretty sure we'll get 1/2 more in too. But I'm pretty sure once we've got all we need we'll start losing some on loan / sales. My guess would be Sold - Jerome (med wages), Shotton (low/med wages), Crouch (high wages) or Walters (med wages), possibly Adam (high wages). Loaned - Ness, Tex, Shea and Palacios. We're no fools and I'm 100 percent sure there's a well structured plan. Compared to the likes of QPR, West Ham and Saints were a very we'll run club. We never appear to get held to ransom which can be frustrating but I really like and will payoff in the long term. Oh and let's not forget KJ out and Odem in. I'm pretty sure we've knocked 10k a week wages off on that deal.

Sorry for old news question but I've been completely out of the loop for most of this close season - what's the Palacios failed medical thing?

It does include Ness and Johnny Tex who won't be on that much. Shea might be got rid of as well. It'll look a lot better come the end of the window.

A move to a Qatari club was all agreed but he failed a medical. Cheers. It's the Laymans equivalent of the house-chain falling apart in the 11th hour, when you've paid for the survey/mortgage/solicitors. I feel like we've been gazumped!!!

We really aren't in a bad state and nothing to worry about. Yes a few players need moving on but it's not a huge concern. Add to the little we have spent on transfers in the last 3 years then we are doing fine.

28 players is lower than the past.im sure in recent times we had 34 at one stage. Do stoke city want to name 25 or less? Maybe 1 or 2 in and 5 out? If we get rid of Shotton and Jerome (which is the very least we should do) and don't count Ness and Johnny Tex then that's 24 instantly. Bego
Sorro
Bardsley Shawcross Huth Pieters
Wilko Wilson Muniesa Muniesa
Whelan N'Zonzi
Cameron Sidwell
Wingie Ireland Arnie
Walters Adam Bojan
Diouf
Crouch Butland and Shea left. Like Tex and Ness, they'll probably be loaned out. As it stands, so I can see the OP's point. We have a right good squad (still not convinced with the right hand side but that's a different matter) and potentially it could be very difficult to keep all of them happy.

Cheers. Apparently he didn't fail his medical, the Qatari club kept moving the bar, changing the wages, appearence fee etc... According to his agents/representatives. What would he have failed it on? Presumably something to do with an old injury as oppose to actual fitness, considering he's just played in a WC

Crouch Tidy looking squad. Not only does it piss on the 2011 squad (when we had all those Europa games) but I seem to remember there were quite a few senior players on our books that we had to leave out. So now it's quality, rather than quantity and while the average wage may have gone up, I wouldn't expect the overall wage bill to have gone up considerably.

The true deadwood in that squad [as in players that are unlikely to see a minute of league football] would be: Shea, Ness and one of Wilko or Shotton. If we weren't to sign another striker, I'd have no issues with Jerome being back-up to the back-up, depending on how much wedge he is on. While I don't particularly rate him that highly, for a club like ourselves to have someone like him knocking around as a fifth-choice winger and probably fourth-choice striker is not a bad thing.

We absolute need to be selling a minimum of 2 players before the summer window shuts. It's something we haven't done nearly enough of since promotion.
