Main issue I found when first playing a LP was the weight, they are quite heavy. Definitely recommend trying one first. I currently have a vintage metal axxe raider. It's pretty heavy compared to other guitars I've played and has a thick neck so hopefully it won't be as big an adjustment as it could be had I played something else.

I have two beautiful copies
A Gibson tagged Epiphone Special I I in cherry sunburst that is lightweight and beautiful to play, you can grab one for less that £200
I also have a white Stagg LP design that is really heavy with gold pickups that is beautiful to look at, but a pig to keep in tune! Again was less than £250 though
Was going to have a LP Flying V Melody Maker for my 40th (about £400) but was told not to bother, if you are having a Gibbo, pay the money (£1-2k) and have a proper one.
I also have a Strat, 3 acoustics and a ukulele at home!
Guess it mainly depends what you want it for and what sound - I play in punk rock bands, through a Fender Princeton amp, which once distorted is just loud and obnoxious whichever guitar I plug in!

Yeah again it's all about the sound.
Personally I have an Epiphone ES335 and a Fender Strat. My dad has a 1971 Les Paul recording in wine red as well as around 10 Hofner archtop acoustics and a couple of very thins.
I actually play(ed) drums mainly in bands but have played guitar for years and years just for a bit of fun really as the old man was quite handy on one.
If it's punk then the standard was always the LP Junior with a single coil pick up but they sound different from other LP's.
Best bet is to just try a few. Local music shops are shutting down due to internet prices but there's something to be said for going in and trying a few out with different pedals and amps etc. If you don't use the shops there'll be none left. Personally I found the LP too heavy and preferred the Strat to play if you are standing on stage for any length of time but if you are sitting at home with it on your knee then you can get some great sounds.

I'm going into Liverpool tomorrow to try the models out (might try the guitars out, too). I'll be getting it from a shop but I was just asking whether it's risky to try a gibson les paul classic out in the shop and then buy the colour I want off their website, if they didn't have it in stock.

Or they could get it delivered to the shop for you?

Or they could get it delivered to the shop for you? I rang up the store yesterday and was told it takes a week to get delivered to the store from another one or website says 1-3 days to have it delivered. I'd imagine the risk of having a guitar delivered from store to store is the same as getting one delivered to myself. My problem is looking at guitars in a shop is completely different to looking online. There are quite a few styles I want to see so I can't see them ordering about 5 to the shop.

Just got back from buying the guitar. Ended up buying a Les Paul Studio Deluxe II. Came extremely close to buying a 2013 standard in tea burst. It felt incredible but in the end I bottled paying the extra money. Would have ended up nearly double.
Cheers everyone for your help!
