I remember a few years ago, when players were sold in this price range after a great World Cup, or banging in goals or assists in another league.
Now it seems clubs are forking out this amount for pretty much unknowns
Last season it was Spurs spunking the Bale money on 4 or 5 players that mostly turned out to be flops.
Now Liverpool have caught the bug buying a Serb for 25 million from Benfica. Also Man United buying this Herrera fella for 36 million and he hasnt even got a senior international cap.
It seems like the Premier League big boys are spending bucketloads of cash on second rate players (as they cant compete with Real or Barca)

You won't see much shitter deals in the Prem than Henderson for 17 mill, Carroll for 30 mill and if Borini goes to Blunderland for 14 mill. Oh yeah and Palacios 8 mill.

I totally agree, it's getting ridiculous, Sunderland paying 14 million for borini is a joke, I'd pay no more than 8 for him, im so glad that Hughes is sensible with our money!

Thats the going rate for an average striker these days, at least he has proved he can score goals for Sunderland. Norwich spending £10m on Wolfswinkle and Spurs buying Soldado must be two of the worst signings ever made. There are bargains out there, fortunately for us Hughes / Cartwright seem to spot them.

Torres to Chelsea for 50 million Could of been a great bit of business for Liverpool if they hadn't spunked most of it on Andy Carroll

There's still a chance United might sign Cavani for 50 million. Will piss myself if they do. He looked fucking awful at the World Cup.

The spanish midfield is one of the most difficult to break into but he is a very good player and still young. I get your point, though. I don't think the tv money now helps.

It's not just about the money, the problem now is that clubs seem to buy in such a haphazard way as though money's going out of fashion. Soldado could have been a great signing for spurs, but why buy a player like that unless you're going to play to his strengths. The bloke is a genuine poacher, he needs a strike partner and width otherwise there's no point, they just bought him because he was available at the time, and they had money to spend. One thing thats pleased me is there now seems to be a genuine strategy to our recruitement.

I predicted this when the new TV deals were announced last year only I didn't realise how inflated transfer fees would become. I now await the first £500k a week contract with "bated breath". Great pity, no it's atrocious actually, some of the extra money isn't earmarked by clubs to permanently reduce ticket prices at or below £20. Looking at club turn over vs gate revenue shows that most clubs gate receipts are <10% of turnover.

Their value is beyond football these days.Merchandising has a lot to do with it at the top end. Take Rodriguez.Granted he stood out in the world cup but last season he scored 9 in 34 games.Hardly prolific and certainly not worthy of a £60 million transfer fee. However Madrid have reportedly sold £20 million worth of replica shirts with his name on them within 48 hours of his transfer. I wonder how many Palacios shirts we sold

Torres to Chelsea for 50 million to be fair at the time that was about right. he was incredible for Liverpool and had the pedigree to justify that figure (65 goals in 102 games is ridiculosly good let alone in the Prem...82 in just over 200 for Athletico...38 goals for Spain making him their 3rd highest goalscorer in the history of the national side and was already a double European Championship winner and a World Cup winner). it's only hindsight that's made that a ridiculous fee

I think it's hard to put fair values on players given how distorted the market is right now.
What we can say without a doubt, is that the transfer dealings that Mark Hughes has been involved with since joining us, are nothing short of miraculous.
