We genuinely have two decent first teams:
Bego or Butland/Sorro
Bardsley/Shotton - Shawx - Wilson - Pieters or Cameron/Wilko - Huth - Tex - Muni
Whelan - Fonz or Sidwell - Wilson
Wingie - Adam - Arnie or Walters/Assaidi - Ireland - Bojan
Crouch or Diouf
In our Europa season, we had to play the likes of Soares and Shotton on the wing, and didn't even bring a full complement of subs against Valencia. Think how we would do these days!

At this moment in time, i'm going to do this, i like imaginary team selections. I'd pick this, i mean, has Assaidi signed? I dunno, let's say he has... GK: Begovic RB: Bardsley CB: Shawcross (c) CB: Huth LB: Pieters CDM: Nzonzi CDM: Whelan RM: Odemwingie LM: Arnautovic CAM: Bojan ST: Diouf ------------------- GK: Butland RB/CB/LB/CDM: Cameron or Wilson LB/CB: Muniesa CDM/CM: Adam CM/CAM: Ireland RM/LM: Assaidi ST: Crouch That's the team Hancock, right there! Bring it on

As this is a prediction of who will play in the first match, I don't think Bojan will start, having joined late in preseason. Also, Assaidi isn't confirmed. So I think the team could be:
-------------------Begovic---------------------
----Bardsley--Shawcross--Huth--Pieters-----
-------------N'Zonzi------Whelan--------------
----Odemwingie----Ireland----Arnautovic---- -----------------------Diouf--------------------
Subs:
GK: Sorensen CB/RB: Wilson CB/LB: Muniesa CDM: Sidwell CM: Adam CAM: Bojan ST: Crouch

I reckon it'll be...
Begovic
Cameron Shawcross Wilson Pieters
Nzonzi Sidwell
Arnie Odem Ireland
Mame
Whelan and Adam to be sold Bojan to be 'rested' Walters or Crouch to figure Bardsley to figure Huth not quite ready Muni to warm up all game and not come on

If the season started today , what would be your team? Ide like to see Geoff played in DCM like for USA in the world cup so something like ...
---------------------begovic---------------------
Bardsley----Shawcross---Huth----Muniesa
-------------Nzonzi-----Cameron--------------
--Odemwingie------Bojan-------Arnautovic--
-----------------------Diouf------------------------

Personally, I doubt if Bojan will start the first game. I could be wrong though - depends how long it takes him to settle into the Hughes way of playing.

I certainly wouldn't be dropping Whelan and I don't think anybody has got a clue where Bojan is going to play.
He could be on the right, in the hole or even up top as part of a '2'.
A very intriguing signing.

As it stands, this seems a pretty balanced side:
Bego
Bardsley - Shawcross - Muniesa - Pieters
Whelan - Nzonzi
Wingie - Ireland - Arnie
Diouf
Bench: Butland, Cameron, Wilson, Sidwell, Adam, Crouch, Bojan
Obviously depends on pre-season performances and any exits or new signings. Seems harsh to leave out Walters and Huth entirely, but it goes to show how much depth we have.

I think, other than Bardsley and Diouf, of the signings so far, no others will start the season in the first XI. Those whe ended last season so impressively have earned the right to show if they can continue where they left off.
Begovic
Bardsley - Shawcross - Huth - Pieters
Whelan -N'Zonzi
Odemwingie - Ireland - Arnautovic
Diouf
Subs: Sorensen, Cameron, Muniesa/Wilson, Sidwell, Adam, Crouch, Bojan

If literally to play this afternoon, I'd start with a team that all know each other and are proven. New players need introducing progressively after a lot of practice together.
Bego
Cameron - Shawcross - Muniesa - Pieters
Whelan - Nzonzi
Wingie - Ireland - Arnie
Crouch
Bench: Butland, Bardsley, Wilson, Sidwell, Adam, Diouf, Walters
Hopefully over the next few weeks the new guys including Bojan prove worthy of first XI selection plus Huth demonstrates he is fully back to form and can handle the passing/possession game.

And why has nobody picked super Jon in their team too?
Not good enough now but let's not forget what a sterling effort he's put in whilst wearing the red and white and albeit not the most skilful as we all now but he's given his all for us.

I know, you've got pace running through the side, mix of youth and experience, nicely balanced with no square pegs, solid defence and genuine goal threat. On the bench you've got some different attacking options and some handy utility players like Wilson and Cameron.

If we were to kick off tomorrow
Begovic Cameron - Bardsley isn't good enough to nail consistant starts for me, hope he proves me wrong and we have some quality performances from both Shawcross Muniesa - Huth isn't a footballer, it pains me to say it but I don't think we'll see a lot of him in the league, plus Muni looked excellent at the end Pieters Whelan - Undroppable right now N'Zonzi - Looks like he is happy, I wonder if he knew nothing about the email from his father to the club Arnie Ireland Odem - Doesn't deserve to be dropped completely Diouf
Bench: Sorensen, Bardsley, Wilson, Sidwell, Adam, Bojan, Crouch.
Huth and Shea not quite making the start just yet after their injury problems. Walters will be gone for me and we won't be signing Assaidi if reports of his wage demands are true.

Bojan Ireland Adam That's nine attacking players - realistically only four of them could be on the pitch, with perhaps three on the bench?

Jerome, Shea and Shotton are nowhere near the squad, are they?

As a basic principle limit the number of newbies in the first few games. Ease them in as the season progresses. What we had in the middle of May, dont forget, was a winning team - all of whom will be busting a gut to keep their place.

There is plenty of time for him to bed in . There is no real reason why he can't play if fit both physically and mentally. But I can see where you're coming from. Both Mr Hughes and Bojan may surprise us. The season as a whole May be full of surprises.

Whatever the reason, one of the most technically gifted teenagers in World football has lost his mojo in recent years. I reckon if anyone can rebuild a striker's confidence it is Hughes. By the same token, even if he is fully fit by the end of pre season, Hughes won't start him if he has the slightest doubts about his confidence after watching him in the pre season games. Time will tell - all I'm saying is that whilst I think (for example) that Diouf will deffo start if fit, it isn't so cut and dried with Bojan. For example, Hughes COULD feel that his first competitive start will be in the League Cup.
