Just looked it up to see when it was I saw The Smiths on their Meat is Murder Tour at Guildford Civic Hall (28th Feb, 1985). Fuck, I feel old now - was it was really nearly 30 years ago ? Remember it well, some bright spark smuggled in a Big Mac from McD's in the high street and hit Morrissey full in the face with it when he came on waving his flowers around - the place fucking erupted and there was a real edge to their performance with Johnny Marr angrily thrashing out every note like Steve Jones. Great venue and some great nights especially the punk nights (always a massive ruck) - Stranglers, Damned, SLF (U2 supporting !!!), The Jam, Bauhaus, Buzzcocks, etc. Oh to be a teenager again... loved the civic hall G-Live which replaced is just as good

Saw the Damned and the Alarm At The Civic and was chaos, crazy crowds and great nights. My brother lives near there now so still go sometimes

I was there last night for The Aussie Pink Floyd.
Not exactly Babylon's Burning but beats staying in and watching Ant & Dec... :-)

Great iconoclastic band.
Shame Morrissey's become a bit of a twat in his dotage but that shouldn't spoil The Smiths' legacy.

Ironic.

Fantastic band derided by musical no nothings who label them as depressing. They were quite the opposite in fact.

I started listening when I was 12, about 1985. Still my first go-to band, today.
A pretty big, and mostly very impressive, back-catalogue, which just hasn't dated.
Up there with the Top 5 bands we've ever produced. Come at me 😜
And they piss all over anything that's been produced in the modern era. Many 'pretenders' have tried, and failed, to emulate The Smiths.
I wouldn't like to see a reunion...so these days, Johnny Marr gets me my fix.

So unique, quintessentially English, northern and working class. No one sounded like them before or after. Profound, humorous, opinionated in a pop landscape of tired clichés and trite sentiment.
Probably my favourite, a story of dislocation and belonging in the face of mortality

Someone has probably already said it, but this could well be a Stoke City theme song. "Heaven knows I'm miserable now."

The Jam are still tops for me but The Smiths are up there. I loved the The Jam as a late teen and didn’t really get into the Smiths until a few years later. For me The Smiths are head and shoulders above The Jam although I still have a soft spot for Weller and co. What I really can’t stand is Weller solo, I once fell asleep at one of his gigs!!!
