Loved them as as young man. Hate them now. What a waste of time.
"Punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate". Just listen to this rubbish.
Do me a favour. I'm up for an argument with someone.

most over rated band in history, even more than oasis, some good tracks but the god like status they enjoy is wasted.

Absolute bullshit, hands down my favourite band of all time. Consistently excellent throughout their short career that left a legacy far greater than most. Johnny Marr creates some of the best jangling guitar riffs in the world, Mozza's lyrics are biting, insightful and hilarious, all with a firm visual identity and instantly recognisable overall sound that still sounds great today.
Salopstick hates them because he's a prick, what's everyone else's excuse?

morrissey is known for his outspoken views but occassionally he does speak sense.
In 2006, Morrissey declared, "I would rather eat my own testicles than reform The Smiths, and that's saying something for a vegetarian."
thankyou squire
and to be fair they left a legacy of inspiration to better bands

The Smiths released four studio albums- all of them classics.
I'll await suggestions to the contrary, but I don't think any other band in history have produced such a flawless body of work.

The most depressing , the most moronic crock of shit in the history of British music.
I'd love to name one of their songs , but I went into a coma every time their music was played.
I say 'was played' because it's not played anymore, or hardly ever...thankfully.
People tend to vote with their feet and the music industry is no different .
No doubt it's legendary stuff for those on the brink of suicide.
Good riddance.

The Smiths were no where near as depressing as people make out. Most of the lyrics are tongue in cheek and very witty and the music is fantastic. Not my favourite band ever but a very talented bunch and released some classics.

Absolutely brilliant. .anyone who says The Smiths are depressing doesn't understand irony.
Their lyrics were sublime but very tongue in cheek..
"So I dropped into The Palace With a sponge and a rusty spanner She said I know you and you cannot sing I said you should hear me play pian-er"
I also saw The Smiths on the first ever Tour at North Staffs Poly Leek Road Site in 1983...there was about 50 students..They were bloody awful..Morrisey poncing around the stage with flowers shoved down his trousers..What a crock of shite I thought but I grew to love them after .12 months later they sold out the Viccy Hall and they were outstanding.
One of my favourite bands of all time.
Morrisey & Marr...Cultural Icons.

Of course there was drivel in some of their lyrics, but plenty of quality too
Not my favourite band - but a fine group for sure.

I was at that Viccy Hall gig too Wizard, they had a harder edge in their live set. They left a fine body of work, though I think 'This Charming Man' is one of the weaker songs, and I'm fairly ambivalent about Mozzer's solo output, and that duo with Souixsie was shite. They brought literacy and humour into 'alternative' music, Morrissey is a great English character, it's good that the Smiths are divisive and inspire a reaction. Better than being bland. If you don't get them, perhaps you're not meant to.
I was having an afternoon beverage in 'The Good Mixer', a great boozer frequented at the time by Blur, Elastica and other minor luminaries of Britpop. Morrissey came in having done a bit of shopping in Camden Market. He left half of his pint of lager when he left. One of my mates nicked the glass {and liquid}, clingfilmed it and had it on top of his telly for several years. Such was the devotion Mozzer inspired.

Just looked it up to see when it was I saw The Smiths on their Meat is Murder Tour at Guildford Civic Hall (28th Feb, 1985).
Fuck, I feel old now - was it was really nearly 30 years ago ?
Remember it well, some bright spark smuggled in a Big Mac from McD's in the high street and hit Morrissey full in the face with it when he came on waving his flowers around - the place fucking erupted and there was a real edge to their performance with Johnny Marr angrily thrashing out every note like Steve Jones.
Great venue and some great nights especially the punk nights (always a massive ruck) - Stranglers, Damned, SLF (U2 supporting !!!), The Jam, Bauhaus, Buzzcocks, etc.
Oh to be a teenager again...

'If you don't get them maybe you're not meant too.' Absolutely. Music is one form of Art and art is totally subjective...No right or wrong answers just opinions. On stage as you say, they had much more of a cutting edge with Johny Marr and that haunting pulsating guitar work..similar to New Order at their best(live)...much more Joy Division than New Order. The Smiths had a rawness that was absent in their records. Loved the Art work as well with their Album/Single sleeves..Rita Tushingham..Quintessential Englishness..something Morrisey tried to portray.( Similar again to Peter Savilles Design work for Factory Records.) The more you look at The Smiths the more you find...but you have to be looking in the first place to find it.

Great venue and some great nights especially the punk nights (always a massive ruck) - Stranglers, Damned, SLF (U2 supporting !!!), The Jam, Bauhaus, Buzzcocks, etc. Oh to be a teenager again... I cut my gigging teeth at the Viccy Hall punk gigs of the late seventies, as a youth I'd throw myself into the pit like a sacrificial lamb. The worst gig injury I suffered was at a Skids gig. Sodden t-shirt was like a second skin with beer, sweat and spit. The bloke in front of me in the pogo crush had a Sex Pistols patch safety pinned to his leather jacket. Some of the large pins had come open in the melee, and I got impaled, like Richard Harris in 'A Man Called Horse'. I had to pogo in unison with him until I unattached myself. Unpleasant. Some of those Bauhaus gigs got very violent. The Wolstan Crew were a bunch of hard Goth scousers who followed Bauhaus around. The first time they played in Hanley, as soon as the drum was hit the moshpit exploded, I was at the edge and got smacked in the mush by a huge Mohican in make-up. I had to tuck in tight and do some elbow fencing to stay upright. It got surprisingly feisty at Half Man Half Biscuit shows. Back on topic of The Smiths, I loved the 'Meat is Murder' album, {but didn't go veggie}. I'd just moved into my first pad and had a tape deck which had continuous play. It was a fixture in the machine, on the late night playlists, straight through. Loved it when they kicked off their shows with the squalling guitar start to 'Meat is Murder', the anticipation.

The only 2 Smiths songs I ever liked They are indeed outstanding tracks Manina. I am surprised that one or two more of their tunes havn't managed to earworm their way into your brain. Not even... 'Hand in Glove' 'Jeanne' {granted a Billy Bragg track.} 'Please Let Me Get What I Want' 'Queen is Dead' 'Cemetry Gates' 'Girlfriend in a Coma' 'The Death of a Disco Dancer' 'Paint a Vulgar Picture' No?
