Can't help feeling he would have done better opening in Trentham Gardens than Hanley, don't think his best markets are druggies and single mums on benefits.

independent retailing / any retailing is a very tough proposition . ive done it for 20 years so i know how hard it can be . he should have done his due diligence and there are firms that will do demographic studies of his location . it will get scary on a wet tues in jan and nobody in the shop . good luck mama though

On the subject of ex players running/owning local businesses here's a blast from the past. Kevin Lewis, full back who Waddo signed from Man Utd in the early 70's used to own a video shop on the A34 in Milehouse.

Good luck to him.

This.....would think it would be far better suited to Trentham. Although I don't know rental differences between the 2, trentham would seem a better option clientele wise?

Hate to say this, but how long will it be until he is selling sausage rolls and Eccles cakes?
Hanley I am afraid is not the place for French fancy tarts and things.

People used to slag Mama off. Bit like Gifton. Both contributed to our current status

On a visit to the Potteries a few weeks ago I took a look around the centre to see where this was and perhaps purchase a pain au chocolat or two. At the time it hadn't opened but what was striking was that there was a surprising amount of people down in the market. It seemed almost as busy as upstairs in the main mall. Whether that regular clientelle will have change left from their mobile phone covers, pillow cases, tin openers or matching despicable me luggage sets is another matter. I do know that in acknowledgement of a loyal servant of the club many fans will make the effort to try out their wares.

I am not a fancy cake man nor do I tend to crave a cup of tea or coffee whilst out and about. However, I am back in the UK next week and I will certainly be visiting Mama's shop to buy something as a small gesture of thanks!

Called in yesterday and it's a very nice place to sit and relax with a coffee and a very, very good selection of cakes.
Very friendly staff who take their time to come over and have chat.
Two coffees and two cakes for just under a tenner, also option to box up and go.
I'll be calling in as and when I'm up town as I always support local businesses with my custom especially now Mamas giving it a go, surely we owe it him.

Yes macaroon heaven, wife was well impressed and brought a box for home.
Coffee was a 9/10 but obviously they'll tailor to your liking, limited but quality selection of sandwiches by the looks of it.
As I said nice place to relax and plenty of custom.
No Stoke related stuff on show which seemed a little odd. For the quieter periods if I was Mama I'd be looking at Coffee mornings in partnership with local charities such as McMillan/Donna Louise it'd benefit all involved.

Applaud anyone trying to give it a go and trying to be that little more different. The clientele are out there but giving the people that we employ to promote our city it's no wonder we can't attract businesses. Hanleys alright for an hour at the most if we pop over to Tesco, that's it. It's the access that annoys me most of all.

Sidibe one of our most underrated players by many Stoke supporters in my opinion. Not a great goalscorer, but always willing to do the job for the team. One of my former heroes! Good luck Mama!

I have just got Mama's book from amazon. I really looking forward to reading it. He has one hell of a story to tell and massive contribution to Stoke is just a small nit.

You could even ask Mama if he fancys a pint of John Smiths at the Floral Hall? I think Mama would be a red wine drinker though?

I have just got Mama's book from amazon. I really looking forward to reading it. He has one hell of a story to tell and massive contribution to Stoke is just a small nit. I got it not long after it came out. I'm not normally interested in footballers' autobiographies, but I thought that since there was likely an insight into our club in recent years in this one it would be worth buying. There's not a lot about the club that's particularly juicy - I think we already knew that Duberry, Brammer and Harper were tossers - but he also says a lot to make you very proud of our club and the way we do things. The more I think on it, the more I hope the patisserie is a massive success. Not just for Mama, but it's the sort of thing that this city needs to encourage. Let's say you're a visitor from outside the city who's quite keen on Anglo Saxon paraphernalia and you've taken a day out to see the Staffordshire Hoard at Hanley museum. If we generously say that that takes up the morning, where does said person go out to lunch? Nearby cities like Nottingham have city centres rammed full of restaurants and cafes that offer something different to what you might normally find at home. We don't really have anything like that. What's going to keep you in the city and spending money in the afternoon? A patisserie on the bottom floor of the Potteries Centre may not be much, but at least somebody is doing something different.

Was in there last Sunday. Nice cakes and crepes. And coffee. Good value. And as an added bonus Ryan Shawcross sat on the table next to us. My Mrs was nervous wreck. But shook his hand as we left. Looks so young in the flesh does Ryan.

Just back from my inaugural visit to Melice and it was very good. Pretty busy too. The coffee was good and my jambon et salade baguette (pardon my French) was massive, with good fresh ingredients. And after a slice of Mme Sidibe's chocolate torte, I know where Mama got all his energy from. The great man wandered in as I was midway through my lunch and we exchanged cool Gallic nods. Service very good all-round. Not cheap I have to say, so let's hope the local economics don't do for what should be a rare positive development in the stop-start-stop evolution of our, er, city centre.
