Dean Whitehead must be close to being on first-name terms with most Championship referees. The Middlesbrough midfielder has picked up his 14th yellow card of the season.

When I hear or see the name Deano or Dean Whitehead, my very first thought is why the hell did Pulis pay 5.5m for the useless bastard.
He was utterly wank whose only real talent was to be able to run a marathon every day of the week.
As a footballer he was even more limited than Jon Walters.
Some liked Deano. I thought he was wank.

I absolutely loved Deano personally. Technically limited perhaps but he suited our caged system perfectly, broke play up, tracked the runners and worked his bollocks off for 90 minutes. We let him go at the right time but he was a great servant to the club in my opinion and I wish him all the best.

Always gave 100% and made the best of his ability. Good pro and did a job for us when called on. He's not YaYa Toure, but he wouldn't be at Stoke if he was.
Sometimes you have to go with what's available. The cage was a massive part of our set up then and we needed a reliable squad member with Rory and Glenn.
He makes N'Zonzi look good value though.

Whitehead never superceded Whelan and Delap as our best midfield and then N'Zonzi and Whelan last season. He was never part of our best midfield. All for 5 million.
And mentioning Delap and Whitehead in the same breath is sacrilege, one was a bloody good footballer.

Dean Whitehead was a wank and vastly overrated footballer. Mentioning the two in the same breath is bordering blasphemy!

We paid way way way too much for him. This 5.5 million was outrageous. He only had one decent season for Sunderland. Other than that he had done nothing in his career. Was struggling at Oxford until he was about 24.

I tend to see the good in all things Stoke City and sometimes lose a bit of objectivity. When I was a kid, the 11 players in red and white were my heroes, no matter how they played, and it seems like 40 years later not much has changed!
Maybe there's still time for me to win you over. I give you the case for Deano.
He never shirked, never stopped working and always gave his best. Maybe that wasn't quite good enough in our elevated status of the last few years, but he scored at Old Trafford and from memory the decisive 3rd goal in a famous FA Cup win against Arsenal. I also love that classic pic where he is sliding in to challenge Suarez at Anfield. Have some of that!
When I think of Deano, I think of the line from Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar:
"Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war"
Good luck, Deano.
