After another fantastically solid performance today, yes he can still improve, however, Ryan has become one of the most consistent players in the premier league.
Having watched Stoke for over 40 years, I believe that Ryan has to be up there as the best centre half in Stoke City's history, yes I know Denis Smith & Alan Bloor were iconic, but they played in an era where foreign players were very rare indeed, the premier league has been graced with some of the very best strikers in the world over the past 6 seasons and Ryan is getting better and becoming a fantastic defender.
I was wondering where you would rate him and whom you think is better? - Discuss

Bearing in mind I never saw Franklin, who has to be number 1, play and only saw Smithy in his later years (plus I was only a young girl), I would put Ryan and Smithy neck and neck at 2=... very different players, both unlucky not to have become international regulars at the right age, what they have in common is unbelievable commitment.

I wouldn't . Shawxross is better. Smithy wasn't unlucky....he wasn't good enough , whereas Shawxross has been 'unlucky'.

Recent history - yes definitely the best. He is consistently performing at the top level. All history - too many people who were lucky enough to see him (my old dad included) say Neil Franklin was the best defender they ever saw (for any team) for it to be in doubt.

Alan Dodd was something special in his prime Good shout, he'd be my 4th after a fantastic top 3. mumf would you seriously say Roy McFarland was a better CB than Smithy? Early to mid-70s who else was ahead of Smithy in the England possibles? Till Phil Thompson I don't think of that as a great era for CBs.

I could name 10 centre halves better than Denis Smith at the time. Don't confuse guts , hardness and determination over style against overall ability.

I never saw Franklin either, but by reputation you would have to put him top of the list.
It is hard to say where our 1970s players would be in the modern game.

Ryan is a very good player.
Neil Franklin was rated as the best in the country by Billy Wright, and as such surely has to be rated the best CB in our history.

As my username dictates Neil Frankin was world class as my dad always told me. I never saw him play though, for players I have seen Smithy ( a proper hero to me ) Alan Dodd, Bloor, Dave Watson and out of left field given the shit we were in big Vince Overson. Ryan is up there amongst the best I have seen and could well be one of the best ever in a Stoke shirt I just hope he stays and proves how good he is.

For a few months he gave a masterclass in defending.

I never saw Franklin play, but he was widely regarded as the best in the country in his time. Steve Bould is a good shout, he was fookin good. But personally I'd put Shawcross ahead of him and Smith and Dodd

I only know Franklin by reputation and never saw him play so can only comment on Denis and Ryan.
Denis epitomised everything we achieved in the 70's and there are some who will say that he is their favourite ever Stoke player: strong, skillful, die for the shirt.
Whereas Ryan is the symbol of what we have achieved in the modern Premiership era; strong, skillful, and a natural leader.
You cant split them, and I am privileged to have seen both play for Stoke City.

Do you think that Ryan has improved as a leader since the loss of Huth. He has grown into the role. I heard him shouting today in the way a CAPTAIN should. Well played Captain Ryan Shawcross.

Like most others I didn't see Franklin but I think he must have been the best I did however see Smith at his peak and as good as Ryan is Smithy was better by quite a bit, I would put Ryan at 4th best behind Franklin, Smith and Huth with Bloor, Dodd and Watson next in order.
