it depends whether you're young and indestructible or old and crumbling Somewhere in between! 36. Starting to feel a bit creaky.... One of my team mates, your age, swears by a regular sports massage every two the three months. She reckons it seriously helps with prevention of niggles and injuries. I have a couple of older mates who use a two handed roller at the end of every run.

I probably need to Google or youtube the roller.

do you foam roll or have a regular leg massage? Neither. Should I? As you are upping the mileage, I would get a foam roller, just to keep heavy legs, lactic acid and injury at bay, you always see footballers athletes etc. getting massages, it's for a reason. Plenty of instructions on youtube

Yes that's the one that Northy is referring to. There's also a trio of rollers for 18.99 on the left hand side if you scroll down.

Does it need to be immediately post run, or can you do it whenever? It's a bit dangerous to lie down at the side of the road and use it mate The roller can be used at any time the equivalent of going for a sports massage. A couple of my mates use the hand held rollers in the cafe straight after a run.

X Box, Playstation and mobile phones have a lot to answer for

So unbelievable you'd say the courses were short back then 😉😉 I think you're right though, I was very inactive as a child, and running was a punishment. It still is but I call it a PB now.

I daren't even mention the old "short courses" jibe with the old gang. It was mentioned last year when Matt Clowes tried to get the course record over at Cheddleton and it's still the same course as it was over 30 years back with a slightly tweaked finish line. In my youth I used to run to and from my grandmothers, 2 miles away, and run over to a mates house in Chesterton, 3 miles away and back. Then play footy, table tennis, tennis while I was there. Can't see my lad even contemplating that sort of active lifestyle even though he was an 80 minute box to box midfielder up to the age of 16 when he retired I do however maintain that he'll be fit for life once he decides to start sport again because that activity for years at a young age can never be lost. I had 40 years off competitive racing so there's hope for everyone it's just a case of getting started.

Did a quick (for me) 10k to Congleton and back yesterday afternoon. 51 minutes (my best time for the particular route I took). The inclines kill me. I lose more time going up hills than I do making up time going down them.
Quick question, how often should you get new trainers? I haven't had these ones long but I've already done 100 miles (they still feel fine and comfortable).
Also, when training for a half, is it recommended you train all the way up to the actual distance (or should I be looking to run further? Or is less, within reason, ok?).

Trainers if I remember correctly every 500 to 1000 miles but the all knowing Northy will know. For a half probably up to 14 miles will do especially with you running on slightly tougher routes. Met up with Yes by chance at the Brit this morning for around 4 miles and we both agreed that you need to get down to a club I must be getting fitter because he was out of breath and I was doing all the talking

Maybe one day I'll be up to Felonious' standards if I keep bumping into him 😉 I enjoyed the company though, my shoes need a bit of a clean now!
