Just to add one of the guys who takes the annual photo got up on the stairs at Rudyard Station only to be asked to get down and given a lecture by one of the station oppos brimming with Christmas goodwill. I seem to remember some sort of complaints forthcoming from them at last years Staffs Moorlands summer series run because someone had stood on the tracks.
I think they could do with a railway enthusiast with some working knowledge of public relations

Any road races coming up? Cant do alsager 5 unless its really rainy or snowy I'm signed up for Four Villages Half in 3 weeks. Alsager 5 Rugeley 10 Knighton 20 They are the ones I'm signed up for before the marathon. Had a decent run on New Year in the bare wrist run with a 5 mile PB, beating my Alsager time on a tougher course. Been stepping up the training now, really need to keep the focus to try and get the sub 3. Might not get it yet but I'll give it a good go!!

It's been called off a couple of times the last few years, once it was delayed for 45 minutes the called off, so we ran it anyway.

I never play the new year resolutions game. Just never really made much sense to me as I've always thought (not that I always do BTW) that if you are going to make changes, why wait for an arbitrary date to do so, start now kind of thing.
Anyway, that said I've promised myself this year that I am going to get my running shoes on and get some tarmac under them. Dangerously close to 40 but even though I am a part time smoker (at work and with drinks on the odd occasion I go out with friends, so never really in evenings or weekends) I've still retained a relatively alright basic level of fitness as I was always historically a very keen cyclist who ventured on the odd 5 mile run who's diet is largely quite sound (bar my obsession with a chippy once a week). Did my last run which was a bit of a one off about 6 months ago and did the 5 miles without stopping at about 9 minutes a mile so nothing fantastic but it could be worse I suppose.
So I've today completed my online registering to join Stoke FIT (so not spoke to them yet) as they are only a few hundred feet from my door in Baddeley Green and going along to join them on Monday evening for a run. Keen to find something I can stick to and do once or twice a week at least and hopefully get around to one day fulfilling a bat shit crazy dream of actually doing a marathon this or next year before my 40th.
Anyone use them? Decent setup? Any recommendations for starting up again? Is it worthwhile doing their start up run of 3 miles (which I think I should be able to do relatively comfortably)? Any idea how long they run for normal runs? Anything going on with anyone on here on a regular basis?

Glad to hear you are doing something positive, yes I would start with their 3 miler, starting too much too quickly is a sure way to get injured. I don't know much about Stoke Fit, see a few of them at races, but some bloke called frank is a bit of a wanker imo.

If you catch the bug fully, then you can always try out another local club, I knew a few that have done that. You can definitely do the marathon, give it a go. Wonderful sense of achievement when you've done one.

Stoke Fit have always struck me as being a decent club and definitely appear to be getting the message over to people thinking of starting running. Start at the three miler and then have a chat with the team leader about which group is suitable for you. As mentioned above build the miles up slowly over a number of weeks otherwise you may well get the dreaded plantar. If I were you I'd forget about the marathon this year and use 2019 to get used to running and build up to a half marathon.

I find bugging this thread is a very good way to get really solid advice as well as stuff you’d only pick up after years. I’d echo what others have said about pacing yourself (no pun intended) Wish you well with it - post updates to keep you motivated 😬

I'd enter a spring 10k and (based loosely on what you've said above) target sub 50, but don't worry too much about your time. Don't try a marathon this year as I reckon you'll end up not enjoying running. Never take on more than you can chew (you will though - I still do). If you're competitive I recommend using strava. Get a GPS watch and log your runs on there and you can compare yourself to other people who run your routes. Try to get yourself as high up the segment leaderboards as you can.

Thanks all. Strava downloaded and I have had my eye on getting one of those android fitbit smart watch type things. Feeling like I might take myself for a gentle one in the morning along the canal so will update...
Stretching is something I have always been notoriously awful at doing. Actually that's probably an understatement. Always seemingly injuring myself because I don't do it properly. Any recommendations there? Any links you swear by?

You'll be hard pressed to find many runners that properly stretch, you're in good company 😂 By the way, when I mentioned the marathon, I meant as a long term goal. I definitely echo what others have said about doing too much too soon. I've done it a few times myself.

Your warm down is more important than your warm up in my experience. 10 minutes on your quads, hammies and calves can save you a load of stiffness later on. Yoga has helped me a lot in the past - downward facing dog is especially useful for tight hamstrings which most runners will develop. A word of warning on Strava - it can become very addictive, but it's no bad thing as it gets you running more.

Good to see you today Cactus, I'm not a huge fan of XC, but I think running in the mud and cold was preferable to being at Shrewsbury today!!
Not at my best today, but a good workout after 3 hard sessions in a week.
It's all towards the sub 3 attempt.
