Felt completely empty tonight. Not sure if it was just an off day, or whether I need to start introducing nutrition on my longer runs. I dont really fancy gels. What else can I try? Would sweets/jelly babies be ok? And do I need to eat before a long run? Eat something like a peanut butter bagel 2 hours before a run, you should try a gel or jelly babies to give you that mid run boost while you ramp up, but not too much as you need to train your body to burn it's own fat, your body only has 90 minutes worth though so after that it needs electrolytes. I use these guys, natural products, the blackcurrant gels have got me through long runs and a few marathons, I find it hard to eat jelly babies on the run, especially from about 16 miles on, I find those little coke bottle sweets OK though. www.otesports.co.uk/about/ - good enough for the Brownlee brothers, good enough for me they do a starter pack www.otesports.co.uk/product/starter-pack/

Is there an equivalent to the peanut butter? Allergic to nuts.

Would sweets/jelly babies be ok? And do I need to eat before a long run? I use these gels made by Torq because they're fairly liquid and don't need to be washed down with water. If you're running 10 miles it may be worth initially taking one at 4/5 miles to give you that boost on the final stretch. Never really been fond of jelly babies/ sweets on a run because of concentrating fully on the breathing. For a long run at a slower speed in the evening you probably need to be getting some light food down you at least a couple of hours before running to avoid the issue of stitch. If I'm doing 10/11 on a Tuesday/ Thursday I'll eat something at around 4 ish. If you want the very top advice then you'll have to beg Yes to get the information from his training partner who seems to be getting absolutely everything right at the moment www.torqfitness.co.uk/product-category/nutrition/fuelling-system-products/gels

I'm certainly no expert on nutrition, but a bowl of porridge is great slow burning fuel, just try and eat at least 2-3 hours before.

I also had a decent run, 1:19:40 half π

4th at the Alderley Park Trail race today and 1st V35. I was given a last minute transfer and was running with no goal or expectations - why are they very often your best races?

How about a piece of fruit, like a banana? Or eggs? Banana is fine, I did 17 miles last weekend after a banana and a handful of nuts 30 mins before heading out (overslept) Not fruit really as it could set off your tummy and is fibre which may help things along mid run Eggs for after, they are protein to help repair and rebuild the muscles after exercise

Four Villages!! π―π―πππββοΈπββοΈ Haha thanks mate. Somebody told me who did the race in the 80's that they got 1:14, and they only came around 250th! Never thought I'd be able to run under 1:20 a few years ago, I ran Potters arf in about 2:06!

I dont think I'll ever get much lower than that. I'm definitely more of a recreational runner. I'll keep doing it, but I'll never probably commit enough to it to get much better times than I'm currently getting. I'll probably never move up to full marathon either. These distances are plenty for me!!

I said everything you've said π now I've done 5 marathons, and even a really silly 24 hour run(not running for 24 hours though)

I then got a bit obsessed with getting times down and PBs etc but said I'd never go up to 10k. I did my first 10k at Tatton Park last year and then said I'd never do a half. And here I am, now training for a half!!! I am pretty certain I wont move upto full marathon distance. I will probably keep dabbling in 10ks and the occasional half, and just work on shaving my times where possible. On a separate note, I can't comprehend how you can go at sub 19 minute 5km pace for an entire half marathon. I can't even manage that pace when going all out on a park run. It's amazing!!

I'm looking to get back in to it after a general fitness lay-off. I'm in a similar scenario that I've now got a young family (7 month old) and want to keep fit in body and mind etc. Never been that great (best 5k time is 30 mins), I just had my first run in ages today with a lunch time 2.5km loop round near my work in Cambridge and I was blowing out my arse! Hopefully it gets better.

Well I went for it on yesterday's run as a bit of preparation for the season opener at Alsager next Sunday. Left the lads standing by the time I hit the canal path. They didn't even catch up when I stopped to shake Cactus's hand on his way out for a jolly They've either over indulged over the holiday season or I'm in the groove

Thanks, glad to hear it improves! Second run out today on a slightly longer 4km loop round near work in 26 mins. Had the last part of a cold over the weekend but feeling better than the run on Friday already. Feel like I've had an energy shot.
