Or just enforce people sitting down like they should be Dave, it should have been easy to do under last two years of pulis anyway ;-) I agree with davejohnno. Very unusually, I wasn't at that game because I was part of a delegation visiting a Borussia Dortmund game to experience their safe standing areas which have a rail along every row, making forward surges impossible. That is the model Aston Villa and others want to pilot in this country. I obviously didn't see the incident, but I was told that the surge which knocked Mabel over was down the gangway. If that is so, irrespective of whether people are standing, the stewards should have kept the gangway clear. I was also told that Mabel herself was standing in the front row because her view was blocked by photographers. Again, if that is true, it shouldn't have happened. In any case, even where persistent standing is clamped down upon, it has always been accepted that people will stand at moments of excitement, such as when a goal is scored. I understand that the incident occurred when we scored. Cheers for that Malcolm. I remember standing on the Boothen End in the 60s and 70s and our definition of a decent crowd was when the gangways on the Stoke End were obscured by the crowd. It was, of course, roofless and all standing in those days. Amazing that 50 years later, grounds in the top flight are all seated (ostensibly for safety reasons) and yet gangways routinely fill up with people at times - with stewards taking no action. Obviously this is at its worst during the last ten minutes (a pet hate of mine) but it also happens during games and it clearly is dangerous. Have Southampton FC been advised (either by our club or by the FSF) that inaction by stewards as regards standing in the aisle contributed to Mabel's accident and have they been advised that the location of their photographers meant that an old lady on the front row was unable to see without standing up?

Wonderful lady, hope this isn't connected to the knock she got at the Soton game.

John - we (the FSF)have offered to assist in taking this up, if requested. Obviously, Mabel's family have other priorities at the moment. In any event we would need to be clear exactly what happened, although the best source for that is probably Southampton's CCTV. Wearing my supporters Council hat, I will contact our club just to see just what involvement, if any, Stoke City have had in this matter. Southampton should have made an incident report.

I'm gutted to read this, I hope Mabel is feeling better very soon x
I had a clear view of what happened, the injuries were not caused when we scored. The police filmed the crowd in the moments after Mabel was knocked down so if any action needs to be taken they should have some kind of evidence.
I understand supporters get a little 'over excited' at games, and perhaps even more so on the last day of the season. What I cannot understand is these lads showed absolutely no remorse for what they had done. I was and am truly sickened by their actions.
We asked police and stewards to speak to them but they were not interested at all. If the stewards had kept the gangway clear I am certain this would not have happened.

If anyone witnessed the incident in which Mabel was injured at Southampton, or has any other evidence/information which they think relevant e.g on the stewarding on the day, would you be so good as to email it to the FSF caseworker, Amanda Jacks, who is assisting the family, amanda.jacks@fsf.org.uk, with a copy to myself malcolm.clarke@fsf.org.uk. Thank you.
We always advise that such statements should not be posted on message boards because they are vulnerable to the accusation that they are not independent and that fans are just copying what other people have said.
As stated above, wearing my Supporters Council hat, I contacted the club this morning. The club were already fully aware of the situation and are being kept up to date by Mabel's family. There is great concern and support from the Chief Executive downwards both about Mabel's condition and also what happened at Southampton.

anyone who has stuck with Stoke since the 40's must be tough. I wish you and your family all the best. The people who knocked her down should be contacting the club to make themselves known.

Oh dear. Good that she is responding to antibiotics though. What is the latest news on the stroke - has she recovered more limb movement since the last update? Keep fighting Mabel - the big kick off won't be the big kick off unless you are well enough to appreciate the result.
