Last week I had to listen to Dave Kemp talk about how unlucky we are as I drove back from Burnley to Stoke and this week it was Denis Smith that had me wanting to smash my car radio up.
After singing TP's praises and trotting out the dreaded "be careful what you wish for" comments, he then totally contradicted himself for the best part of 5 minutes.
Apparently we are trying to evolve...He then went on to say that we are too direct and have stopped playing football
Apparently we are using a system that many teams use nowadays and then went out to say how the success of the system was dependent on the mobility of the front man and an ability of others to get beyond that front man
Apparently Pennant has been "in and out" of the team this season - Try OUT Denis
Apparently it is nigh on impossible for a club like Stoke to break into the top 10 of the Premier League then alluded to the achievements of WBA and Swansea to suggest why Stoke fans may be frustrated.
He spoke about the efforts that Tony Pulis has put into the academy before correcting himself and referring to the chairman and the money he is putting into the training ground and youth.
To top it all, the next caller was a Chelsea fan who said "I don't know what Stoke fans expect. Tony Pulis has done a great job. They are an established premier league side, in midtable of the best league in the world and have signed some quality players like Charlie Adam and Steven Fletcher".
To say I wanted to smash my radio up for the second week running was something of an understatement. I would love to speak to that Chelsea fan and tell him that Rafa is a great manager. Why are they moaning about having a manager who has won European and Domestic trophies, has them in the top 3 of the best league in Europe and has signed great players like Demba Ba and Robin Van Persie.
I hope Denis Smith is co-commentating tomorrow. I would love to take him to task about the crap he was on about tonight.

Problem is we were evolving and now are more one dimensional than ever.

Exactly the point. To say we are evolving and to then say that we have stopped playing football in the opposition half and are too direct was pretty embarrassing on the part of Denis really.
I know it isn't the done thing to knock the bloke, legend that he allegedly is, but the bloke needs to visit the same nuthouse as Tony Pulis.

Wouldn't dare go as far as saying that, but his performances on Radio Stoke are usually nothing less than cringeworthy. He works for the club though, so you can't really expect anything other than total backing for the manager. It's a pity it has to be so cliche ridden though, and inaccurate to boot.

Is it common knowledge that Dennis Smith is employed by the club?

It's a shame when ex pro's are more concerned about promoting good PR than actually being honest with both themselves and that of the fans that used to pay their wages. That's not loyality ... it's called bullshit & biased propaganda....
Personally , I prefer ex pros' who are more blunt and honest....Jimmy Greenhoff .

I knew I had read it somewhere. Quote from Pulis in the week "I brought Denis Smith and Alan Durban into our Academy to get people with a football background and a local knowledge involved."

Gleghorn was the most interesting, insightful and honest pundit we've had on Radio Stoke. It's a tragedy he was got rid of. He didn't appear to be anti-Pulis either. Just balanced and told it how he saw it.

It's probably an oversight on the part of Radio Stoke that they don't mention it. smiley-face-whistle-2 Funny thing is that I remember in the dim and distant past, when Durban was manager in the early 80s, he refused to send anyone to scout the local ladsandads scene, and thought that any decent footballers should be sent to the club by the ladsandads clubs instead.

Evolution is all about survival. We should not be all about survival as a club now.

Why do you think Pulis has him involved in the Academy? Perhaps it's because they share the same lack of interest in young talent? As for Denis Smith, MoMo, I'm not saying he is a cunt or anything of the sort, merely how he spent 5 minutes contradicting himself without any interrorgation at all. Legend that he may well be, it was still absolutely cringeworthy.

Does Denis pay a HUGE sum of his weekly earnings to witness the dirge we do or is he in a priveleged position of media work where hospitality is on a plate so the party line must be trotted out.
Mick Cullerton is the only one with any bollocks

Presumably we're not allowed to suggest a legend might be capable of talkingshit I'm sure Sir Stan smiled at Pulis once when he was manager of Gillingham, I'm going to go and shout at his statue for an hour this afternoon. Conroy loves Tone but that's only because he works for the club. Fucking hypocrite. Anymore for anymore? Bring out your legends.

I think that Dennis will always support a fellow manager given his own career post playing football.
I'd also imagine Dennis and Tone hold similar views, values and beliefs which will also mean that they have a mutual respect for each other ( both were certainly of the more physical / 100% effort persuasion as players and are thus likely to put great sway into the need for effort and commitment above raw talent)
Personally I don't have problem with Dennis but it is important to understand why he and the likes of a Gleghorn are likely to hold very differing views.
I think he (Smith) is defending the indefensible but I understand why.

As a player Denis was a favourite of mine. Unfortunately the game has moved on, and like our manager, Dennis has not.
