I thought he looked head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates. He does go sideways a bit, but that's what good footballers do- keep possession. It isn't always possible to go surging through midfield or pinging defence splitting passes every time you get the ball is it? God knows we've waited long enough for a midfielder who can keep the ball, so let's not start complaining about it eh? This x1000 But some Stoke fans are tossers. At one point we had about 7/8 passes keeping possession going sidewards and backwards but keeping the ball and the groaning started! Groaning about keeping the ball! To be fair Bayern the moaning and groaning when we(extremely rarely these days)keep the ball for more than 3 or 4 passes in midfield or at the back isn't a new thing. It's always amazed me at how quickly a good percentage of Stokies want the ball twatted up the field. Perhaps this explains why Pulis still has people defending him? It definitely isn't a new thing though it has gone on for years.

The groaning about keeping the ball always pisses me off. Anyone that does it clearly doesn't understand football.

I agree entirely with most of the sentiments on this thread- Jamo, Werrington,y2j, bayern, old. As I said on another thread i would make him captain, give him his head and build the team around him. The responsibility of leadership would help to channel is passion before he gets too disillusioned. ( no disrespect to Ryan - but perhaps he would see it as a relief for a period of time) Of cousre Tony will never do this because he couldn't cope with relinquishing control. he treats the players like robots, shouting minute instructions from the side. Waddo did much the same with creative players, worked with them, to their strengths, certainly not knocking all creativity out of them at the altar of the system. Why buy a player like N'Zonzi or Pennant or Palacios and not do this? The system worked when we had team spirit and some gems in Ricardo and Rory's throw. Players like Faye , Griffin ( a full back1), Lawrence and Wilko simply played in their positions.
It isn't working any more.

Must acknowledge Trouser and Greenhoff also, whose threads I almost always agree with

My only issue with N'zonzi is his stupid Orange boots!
Until the Southampton game, he was wearing black boots and was playing brilliantly.
Since the orange boots have made an appearance, he isn't playing as well as he can. He played well yesterday but he kept things simple and for me, played within himself.
He looks frustrated and as Jamo said above, is a ticking time bomb at the moment.
Get the black boots back and normal service will be resumed with him.

Blackburn fans said he was a great player until the team struggled. Well that's what my contact reckons. Apparently he got very frustrated and his performance's dropped. We've seen this come out in the last few games, and I hope it doesn't continue.
As 'jss' said the team should be built around him, it's as simple as that.

he was our best player today. he must curse the day he signed for us,far too good for stoke I bet he doesn't, no one else wanted him, he'd still be in the Champ if it wasn't for us. He has been a class act though and does his job perfectly most games.

Yup it's been going on for years and is one of my two reasons I sometimes give The Boothen the v's, the other being block 19 and Delilah! ;D It really does annoy me, why people can't see that keeping the ball is actually a good thing I'll never know.

He's a defensive midfielder. Assists aren't his job any more than saving penalties are.
His job is to protect the back four, win the ball and keep the ball and he's been the best Stoke midfielder with that remit in the last 10 years at least.
When he is allowed to get forward he's shown a good knack for slaloming round his man and playing some good balls into the channels, but he's rarely given licence to do that.

I didn't see N'Zonzi waste a single pass. Me neither. I was really surprised to see him make a lot of good passes when under pressure from the opposing players. Great composure and not afraid to hold the ball up before making a precise pass.
