I was lucky enough to witness Jimmy's great goals at Birmingham and Derby, described in the above article. Jimmy was a genius, I can't even guess what his transfer value would be today. We can only be thankful that Tony Pulis was never his manager.

In his prime he'd be worth upwards of £20 million today. How much upwards is anyone's guess. He didn't just score great goals but he always had an eye for the right pass or lay off to a better placed colleague. Quite bizarre how he never got a cap. I bet if I set my mind to it I could think of 50 capped England players during my lifetime who were not fit to lace his boots.

The first Stoke Top I bought had no 8 'Greenhoff' my favourite Stoke player of all time Brought to Stoke from Birmingham City in 1969 by Waddo (The Greatest Stoke Manager of All Time)
The saddest day EVER as a Stoke supporter was when he was sold to The Shit..I remember standing on The Boothen against West Brom a few days after we sold him It was like a wake Terrible, only 15,000 down that day

I like the anecdote about the goal he scored for Port Vale. I am trying to picture it now!
It is ironic to think that mostly all the Stoke fans of that era would have cheered that Vale goal simply because it was scored by one Jimmy Greenhoff. He was really adored by the fans.
Brings a lump to my throat thinking about him.

Quite simply a fantastic footballer. His relationship with Huddy was the finest partnership I've ever seen in 40 odd years of watching Stoke City. Two things stopped us winning the league. Signing Peter Shilton instead of Peter Osgood and injuries including a ridiculous amount of broken legs. We had a great side and Jimmy was at the heart of everything.

My all time favourite Stoke player.
My lad's middle name is James in honour of the great man.
As some body has already suggested in today's money Jimmy would be a £20m+ player, he wouldn't be at Stoke as we wouldn't be able to afford him.
Thanks for the wonderful memories Jimmy.

Anyone remember when he broke his nose in a game? I cried - and I must have been in my late teens or early 20s at the time - what a wuss I was! ;D

I cried - and I must have been in my late teens or early 20s at the time - what a wuss I was! ;D It was in the game against Birmingham when he scored that great volley. and he collided with the post, I think. I vaguely remember seeing it on Star Soccer the next day, though it's not on the YouTube videos of that game.

A truly wonderful player. He was a joy to watch, and whenever he got the ball the crowd held their breath, because Jimmy could score goals from almost anywhere on the pitch player. Alongside Big John, he made the best pairing in English football, both then and ever since. Sadly, today's supporters will never see the likes of Jimmy again, unless hey are very, very lucky indeed. Those who did watch Jimmy know how privileged we were. he should have walked into any England side, and had he not been Stoke player, he would have done so.

My favourite ever Stoke City player and a true Stoke legend, not like some of the powder puff supposed legends banded around on here after playing for us for 18 months and giving a few half decent performances. Also a total Gentleman.
A very fitting tribute.
