Although. I haven't lived in the area for many years I've always felt that the 5 towns + Newcastle was in a way a weakness for the city , S.O.T doesn't have one major Center that can be the focus for regeneration , stoke , Hanley , Newcastle are all town centres fragmenting the city, what do people think ?

Agreed. But at the same time the 6 towns are what make SOT unique. There is no reason why funding and regeneration can't be distributed equally between the respective towns. I can understand Hanley getting more because it is the CBD but the way in which the other towns are neglected is a shame, although Longton has changed alot in the last ten years with the Tesco, Argos, Next and now the new retail park but its still a slum and a shit hole Drive round SOT and through council estates such as Bentilee, Meir, Blurton, Chell Heath, Abbey Hulton, Norton, etc and its just depressing. There is nothing in Stoke (apart from the mighty Potters) and my advice to the young uns is to get out whilst you can.

They should just rip all of Hanley down and start again, let's be honest.

Apart from the demolition sites and the tired looking terraces Hanley looks pretty decent compared with 5 years ago. There's a lot of work being done all around the town centre. The cant do much about the people at the moment, but regeneration should attract more outsiders in future.
As for the 6 towns thing, what a load of rubbish. Having 6 towns does nothing to attract outsiders, it just leads to fragmentation and duplicate shops/facilities.

Looks no different to me, apart from the odd club/bar has changed names and its had a new Tesco but thats about it. Oh and Woolworths has gone ;D Still the litter infested , grim dump it was when I left back in March 2008

Those of you that think that retail landlords in Stoke-on-Trent have the ability to pick and choose who they let properties out to, need to think again. The people of our city have amongst the lowest disposable income in the country, therefore, making money in a shop in Hanley is only feasible at the bottom of the market. Decent brands like Nandos and H&M are only coming here because there is nowhere else to go, and as Sal has already said, they will be getting sweeteners such as rent free periods and capital contributions towards their shopfitting. If we pick and choose who can and cannot come, then our council tax will be paying for empty shops instead of going on the things that matter like social care. Our city was sold down the river years ago when the council ran the city for the benefit of the potbank owners. They stifled outside investment and kept Stoke in the dark age so that the potbanks could have a ready and cheap source of hard-working will poorly educated labour. We should welcome companies like H&M, because if they can make their businesses work here, then other businesses will be encouraged to invest. (and I don't just retailers etc). Excellent post. Why do the people of Stoke see this as a bad investment to the area, we are crying out for major new development and enterprise, it just might give the area the kick that it needs.

New bus station - Not built yet Ring road - Fair enough Church next to the Potteries centre - Can't say I've noticed Tesco - I mentioned Tesco New Fire station - Makes no difference to Hanley as a whole New garden across from the library - Again makes no difference, most people who go shopping or drinking in Hanely don't go anywhere near the library Work being done outside Wilkos - Where Yea I noticed the terraces near the job centre last year and the area where the 'hole in the wall used to be', that certainly looks better Apart from the tesco and the new road near where the new bus station is going to be I honestly can't see any real change. For every new building it seems like one closes down and stands empty and derelict

The last big news was Poundland opening in Tunstall I worked there when it first opened and we had news paper cut outs on the wall about how super it was. Then the store died and we got laid off,...... That's what happens when towns try to improve their high streets by enticing the better class of shops. Not enough wealthy people in Tunstall to keep it viable I imagine.

Nando's makes me laugh. It's a fast food outlet with knives and forks, yet people bang on about it like it has Michelin stars!
What makes me laugh most is when people go there on dates ;D Daft fuckers!

You've hit the nail on the head with that Harry. Everyone blames the Council but essentially we have 6 or 7 interconnected small towns none of which can be totally ignored at the expense of the others. The challenge is a unique one with no real answer. In the end I think you just have to rejoice in the diversity of the multiple towns but accept there will never be a big city feel to this place.

Why exactly cant they be igbored at the expense of others? Politically speaking I doubt it is expedient so simply say "stuff you tax payers of Fenton, Longton, Tunstall etc. Hanley is the future".

I don't know the full situation, but whoever was responsible for pathfinder should be in jail. They've left a right mess behind and I've no doubt they're still enjoying good careers, while those poor people rot. Shameful.

I don't think the smaller towns are the problem it's Hanley , stoke , Newcastle , big towns in there own right , Stoke bing the big loser IMO

I think I have found my level with Nandos. Just a small step up from KFC and ususally some quite tasty looking Latino waitresses. What not to like ? The food isn't bad ( just ridiculously over priced ) its nothing like KFC though ?

I would happily walk into any Nando's and hose the entire restaurant with an AK47. The type of person who goes there is one who relies on celebrity culture to fill their sad fucki g lives. "Oh I saw Tulisa, JLS and Beyonce in OK magazine eating a Nando's chicken drumstick so I must go because I am a fucking retard!" Do we really need a crappy, overpriced chain restaurant here? I for one am proud SOT has not got a Nando's.

Why are we trying to make Hanley into all the other chav infested dumps, we have chance to introduce something a bit different shops wise, total new slate, but nah fuck it lets do what everyone else has done. Being like all the other chav infested dumps would be a step up for Hanley to be fair. You cant pick and choose your tenants when half the shops are boarded up or 99p stores. Part of me also thinks they're trying to spread themselves far too thinly. Hanley, Piccadilly, Festival Park, City Sentral etc.... there's not enough money in the area to support them all.

Chiquitos is banging never mind the others. (Never really fancied a Nandos)
On the whole Hanley is becoming much better and slowly we are seeing the better retailers appearing, and I rarely go any where else tunstall burslem and stoke might as well be bulldozed its like walking around the shit rat infested streets of old Victorian england most people walking these streets have a can of beer in hand and look like they have never done a days work in their lives, Newcastle is not too bad but I only ever go to the cinema really.
The fact remains what happens to the potteries when this opens as already mentioned most of the better retailers look like they will move. Festival park will be fine as most people prefer out of town shopping and free parking these days and the odeon shutting is only a good thing it's outdated and fast becoming what canon/abc cinema was when odeon opened the vue in Newcastle is a far far better cinema and hopefully vue opens an IMAX screen in the new cinema
