Saxon. I'd forgotten those clowns. Whitesnake were abysmal as well. Kiss. I like some of the first Rainbow. Rush. For their Ayn Randishness. They won as well. Feckers. Tarot Woman

Duran Duran. Hate everything they stood for, but hey, they won At least they had a message... ba bah barra this is Planet Earth... Although I'm not claiming true Duran Duranydom, 'The Chauffeur' is a class tune. and this raises a grin:

I saw his Deep Purple in 76 just before they folded and they were truly abysmal. Perhaps it's coloured my judgement. My sister has one of the big hair Whitesnake albums she puts on when she wants rid of me. Bad. The Rainbow track I attempted to post was Man on the Silver Mountain. I'll have a go tomorrow. I might take the precaution of listening to it first though.

I could see the rationale in either of those choices. At least they were unabashed in their lameness, not hiding under the twin banners of musical deceit: the scent of Patchoulli and 'technical prowess'. I never liked Sad Cafe either.

Barbie girls not bad really. A valid post-modern critique of consumer society surely?

It's all a bit of mock/staged anger as far as I'm concerned. But anything deliberately aiming for the middle of the road deserves running over imo.

I can't really find it in me to hate* anyone who's gone to the trouble of mastering a musical instrument. 40 years on and I'm still struggling with a 2/3 speed Louie Louie.
See how this runs for now. It's given me an idea for something a bit more positive later. Here's a live version of that Rainbow track I failed to post. Check Ritchie's Mauled by Hull Tigers mime at the end.
* Saxon were most definitely shite though.

The Who. As musicians they are very good. Entwistle was such a good bass player. Moon is over rated although was good to watch when he played live and Townsend is just an arrogant bighead nonce who thinks the sun shines out of his arse. Have never known such a big band to have ( bar a few ) such mediocre songs. Kasabian are the same. Great live, shit songs. Wasn't there at the time to understand the impact that they had but listening to Who albums now, bog standard at best. Some of their stuff is utter tripe.

Just blows my head off every time I see it ... a band on absolute fire. And the really good stuff of their own, was particularly brilliant. Noel Gallagher once said, take the top ten songs of any band ever and compare each of those songs individually with the top ten songs of The Who and The Who will probably come out on top. It's a strong argument.

Metallica can fuck off. Megadeath. Def Leppard. the lineup of Stone Temple Pilots with not Scott Weiland. Jack White. anything and everything that Corey Taylor is involved with. could go on for ages.

It's a strong argument. Not heard that before - but it's a good suggestion. A long career producing music doesn't mean producing lots of good music. In most cases, a bands best material is produced in their early days (the Beatles being a notable exception; they were constant high quality at all time pretty much, Duran Duran the same but different; they wee always utter shite). So looking only at top 10 tracks is a neat idea. Not saying the Who would come out on top - but they'd have an impressive line up.
