I think we have reverted because of the fear of European football leaving us vulnerable to relegation. I hope the manager has the balls to be more entertaining and expansive next year. Didn't at least half of yesterday suggest that he will? I really do find the negative reaction to yesterday perplexing in the extreme. We were decent first half yesterday absolutely but again beyond that Walters chance we ha absolutely no penetration and nothing to offer from open play. I know we were at Anfield but that's been the story of our season.

Many comments on this thread about the team 'regressing' because we are not playing the same quality of football as we did in the last quarter of last season.
Well lets wait until May to come to that conclusion, ie lets play out the final quarter of the season. The pressure is off and we have some possible memorable matches to come Man City/Arsenal at home for example.
January - March last season was pretty dire. Remember - it didn't click until the 16th March last year - maybe the 1st half yesterday was that 'clicking' beginning.
None of us have a crystal ball, but lets see how this final quarter of the season pans out - before comparing it to last season.

Grinding out points is potatoes and carrots. His mum drilled it into him he's not allowed to touch his ice cream until he's eaten enough potatoes and carrots that he's mathematically certain not to get rickets.

That's actually a fantastic way of describing Pulis! ;D

Luke, read your thread and was rayt happy.....
got half way down the page and felt like cutting my wrists...
you stay on with that positive attitude lad because it serves you well...in life things happen that do not make us perfect and have perfect lives.... BUT THE LAST 5 OUT OF THE LAST 35 HAVE BEEN NOTHING BUT MONUMENTAL......
and if we ever end up where we were (which we won't under TP) the 12000 extra fans will literally disappear up their own arses Dave

It's been a good season from an achievements perspective in my opinion - another decent cup run, a good showing in europe and a solid mid table finish. We've just been very inconsistent really with how we've played - it just doesn't feel like we've ever played well apart from a handful of games.
All in all, I'm more than satisfied though. With how football is now, this is pretty much as good as it gets for a club our size

Life's far better with an outlook like yours Luke.
Too many have rose tinted glasses for the glory days that were never there. The older we get the better we were. Our good years were an exception. Our mediocrity the norm.
Those that moan about the money spent, how much have we made?
In the days gone by we lost to the teams we dispatched in the cup.Nuneaton Telford anyone. 1987 was our last 5th round appearance. We've made it to the 5th, final, and 6th in the last three years.
These mediocre European teams have seen off better teams than us.manure lost to a team who were beaten by FC thun.
Like someone posted without winning the league cup, 1972 would have been a mediocre season.

Under Waddo in the early 70s we had some very exciting players - Hudson, Conroy, Greenhoff etc. But I can also remember the infamous "Waddington's wall"; "Waddington out" chants; Waddo getting stick for playing Eric Skeels ( a defensive midfielder who made Salif Diao look like Stephen Gerrard in attacking terms); I distinctly remember going to Goodison in 1968 and seeing, to the dismay of the Stoke fans, Waddo sending Bill Bentley, a cumbersome fullback if ever there was one, trotting out with a No.9 on his back as we played for a 0-0 and lost 3-0. There is nothing new about thinking we know better than the manager. Of course we do ! No Stoke team which I have ever selected and prepared for a game has ever lost ! ;D

I can't wait until the year 2052, after Stoke have spent another long spell in the lower divisions and finally make it back to the top flight. No matter how good the 2050s team is, even if they win the bloody Champions League, I'm going to refuse to allow anyone to compare it with the great team Pulis built. I will show my grandchildren a compilation clip of all three Glenn Whelan long range wonder goals and claim he did that every week. I'll recall how we all laughed every time Fuller got sent off for punching his captain because football was much more fun in those days. I'll share anecdotes about our legendary winger Jermaine Pennant, who loved his pop and turned up drunk on matchdays, but that's because he was such a fantastic character, not like the boring bastards from the 2050s. I'll tell them how Rory Delap played until he was 50 and once, when it was rumoured Rory was going to be sold, 23,000 fans protested at the King's Hall in Stoke. And most of all I'll bore them to death with my tales of our amazing African ambassador Salif Diao. My grandchildren are going to hate me.

Brilliant! ;D Lets be honest here about where and what we are and where we'll hopefully remain. Anything better than 16th in the Premiershit and last 16 in the FA and League Cups is us over achieving. As for Europe what were we ranked? I'd say we went way beyond what we expected to achieve. Remember we started the campaign with Ryan Shotton as one of our strikers! The footballs is pretty crap though and what could be argued is that we could achieve our 'standard' playing better football.
