When was the last time we sold a regular player to a "better" club for a profit? I remember being gutted when Steino went to Chelsea and before that Bould/Dixon to Arsenal but it doesnt seem to happen anymore. All we do now is farm out players to lower clubs at a loss. So who was the last player we sold who went onto better things and had achievements at a bigger club?
btw I dont count Ben Foster as he wasnt a regular.

this is a very interesting point, despite improving hugely over the last 5 or 6 seasons, we have never had to sell any of our best players on so far. That is surprising surely. Well done Mr Coates! We are not a selling club, unlike many.

So what other way is there at looking at it!?

One of the reasons we don't sell players on to 'bigger' or 'better' clubs is that TP likes to have players in their prime/just past their prime, ie still good enough but with plenty of experience, so when we've finished with them they are on the downward spiral and winding down their careers.
Trouble with that is you pay a fortune and get little, if any, return

Trouble with that is you pay a fortune and get little, if any, return whilst i agree that pulis isn't a huge fan of playing very young players, I cannot agree with what you have said: our entire back 4, bego, jones, jerome, whelen all bought before their prime. Whitehead, walters both bought in their prime. Ethers, Pennant and palacios are here for their prime, but are misfits really Crouch is old, ditto woodgate and upson.

Yes, just saw it... off the top of my head I would say Whitehead, Tuncay, Jones, Crouch, Palacios, Davies, Tonge, Collins, Olofinjana, Diao are all good examples of paying a lot of money (more than other clubs of our standing would pay, and including wages) for average and/or ageing players.

Yeah I just think he looks at buying players 27-30 and keeping them to 31/32 before getting rid, thus stopping any chance of us returning decent money or selling to a club further up the league than us.

Chamberlain to Sheff Wednesday. His career nosedived after that.
BTW I was talking to the Turks who run my local kebab place . They're Galatasaray fans but have a lot of respect for Tuncay. They reckoned he was a superb player for Fenerbahce but has been pretty crap in England - much to their disappointment; his star has dimmed in Turkey since going to England and they reckoned he probably needed to return there to rescue his career. They saw Tudgay as a better ambassador for Turkish football in England.
