Great stuff. I was at both games. I well recall that it was freezing cold at roker in the replay. I also recall that Mahoney had to miss the game due to a family bereavement. Great to see Hudson and greenhoff again.

Cheers Roots. I was there for that one and remember my drunk Dad getting back from the reply. Very disappointed not to win that day.

The Sunderland fans were unbelievable that day.
A second division club at the time and they came and swamped the place.
I was pretty sure we had gone once we failed to win this game.

How many did they bring? Anyone know. I suppose it was more difficult to put a number on away followings in those days. For anyone who doesn't know, there are a selection of stoke videos from the 60's/70's and 80's on my youtube channel. More uploads to come. www.youtube.com/user/NorthyRamone1973

Hi Roots, back in the 70's I went a midweek cup game against Chelsea and we won something like 6-1 or 6-2 do you have any clips or info on that game?

I was there and remember it well. From about the 80th minute onwards a sea of Mackems were bobbing up and down knowing if they held us in this match, they would finish us off in the replay. I also remember singing 'We hate Geordies' at them. (Hope they were offended anyway)!

At both games and as someone said above it was freezing at the replay. Went up there on an old PMT single decker (no luxury coaches in those days) and the heater had packed in on the way up so by the time we got back to Stoke at 2:30am I felt like I had hypothermia.

I was there in Butler St Stand right next to the Stoke End as it arched around.
Sunderland brought thousands that day and in the replay they went one up before Denis Smith equalised and they went straight up from the kick off and reclaimed the lead ( Pop Robson ) and went on to win 2-1

Yes - I was there and remember being well pissed with the draw. Don't know why but I remember no one fancying our chances in the replay.
One thing though. I may be mistaken, but I recall Sunderland fans in the seats in the corner of the Butler St stand next to the Boothen End. And they made a hell of a din.
Anyone else remember that?

It was 1976. I was there. It was a game we expected to win In 1976 severtal of the top clubs got knocked out early so it all sort opened up for us. BUT we blew it. In the hotel the night before that game there was a row (instigated by one of our players) over whether the players could have a glass of wine with their meal and it had a detrimental effect on the teams morale.

I was there and remember being totally gutted with 0-0. The video suggests that we had a load of chances, including the Salmons effort right at the end - although I have absolutely no recollection of the pattern of the game. My overriding memory is one of frustration and anger aimed at the Sunderland fans in the Butler stand - their (small) seating allocation was towards the Boothen if memory serves - as it became clear that this was not our day.
They certainly had a huge following - although I would say 12,000 (between a quarter and a third of the entire crowd) is an overstatement. 8 or 9,000 would be my guess. But this was not an all ticket match, and so it's impossible to be certain.
My predominant memory of the replay was getting updates over the radio of an inevitable defeat - whilst breaking up with my then girlfriend at her house in Endon. Altogether a painful evening.
Even more gutting was the fact that they drew Crystal Palace (I think) in the QF - at home. But perhaps we would have cocked that up as well....
Great film - many thanks.

I remember the coaches of Sunderland fans just coming and coming and coming.
They were a second division team and I just never envisaged this invasion.
I don't think I ever saw so many red and white scarves at Stoke in my whole life. You hoped they were Stokies but that little bit of black on the scarves told you they were not.
I was 14 years old and the Sunderland contingent took my breath away that day and I knew, although I never admitted it, that our fans had a way to go to match that sort of passion.
I can admit it now, it was truly humbling.

Thing is as well it was only three years since they had won it so they wanted the taste of Wembley in their nostrils again.

Believe it or not there were people at the time who had the temerity to suggest that Hudson was a lazy player.
look at the ground he covered, what a legend he was.

Can't recall the actual tv show the highlights are taken from. Was it a regional show? It won't come as any suprise that Stoke were rarely featured on the BBC's MOTD shows in those days, despite being a top team much of the time. I seem to recall that Gerald Sindstat was the link man on Granada's sunday afternoon soccer show 'Kick Off, though this could have just as likely shown on any of the regional shows in other areas like Tyne Tees, Yorkshire, Anglia, or our own Midlands show 'Star Soccer'. Maybe someone else would know better? I also remember being refereed by Sindstat. Is he still on the panel of the NS referees association? Great video memories as ever Roots... I wish you'd remind me when Stoke matches get shown
