Good question that Pugsley, you tend to think that Pulis doesn't trust 'flair' players, but he seemed to value Hoekstra...

look at the Greenhoff goal. At 1.22 in the Birmingham Kop celebrating is what looks like Mike Bernard.

Quite a few Brum fans doing the old sporting applause - he played for them before us didn't he?

look at the Greenhoff goal. At 1.22 in the Birmingham Kop celebrating is what looks like Mike Bernard. Great film - many thanks. I was standing not too far from "Micky Bernard" that day. There were quite a few Stokies there, but most remained largely under the radar and there was definitely no "mob". That game is still one of the most complete away performances I have ever seen us turn in. As many on here will recall, we were (I am almost certain) top of the league after this result, and I also went to Leeds the following week, where we got well and truly tonked. The away following at Leeds was a similar story to Birmingham. Both were intimidating places in those days - although I accept that I might have been a more than averagely paranoid teenager. Another five (and possibly four) points would have given us the title that season. The fact that Derby won it, after we had won at the Baseball Ground in March (?) made it all the more galling. The Derby game was simply monumental. And unlike Leeds and Brum, we must have had between 8,000 and 10,000 there that day - visible and very vocal.

We were indeed top of the league after the Birmingham game. That was the one and only moment in my Stoke supporting career when I truly believed we had made it. Top of the league and 3-0 up away at half time, how good is that?! I went to the away game at Leeds which followed and we lost 3-1 I seem to remember, we nabbed a consolation goal at the end from the late Ian Moores? I remember a very small mob of Stokies in the opposite end to the Elland Road Kop, we were stood in a deep paddock at the side with I suspect a number of other Stokies but everyone was keeping their heads well and truly down

I remember a very small mob of Stokies in the opposite end to the Elland Road Kop, we were stood in a deep paddock at the side with I suspect a number of other Stokies but everyone was keeping their heads well and truly down Indeed. I was in that deep paddock a couple of years earlier. A group of 8 or 9 of us (all under 15) went on a Beresford's bus. The bus picked us up in Leek, and I doubt there were more than 20 people in total, including the driver. It was an absolute piss-cutter of a day - November or December I think, and the route taken was cross-country, via Buxton, Matlock or similar. We were (needless to say - not much really changes) beaten with not much more than a whimper. After the game, we wandered up and down in the horizontal sleet at the agreed pick up point. But there was no sign of the bus, and we had to blend into the crowd as groups of very intimidating Leeds urchins went on the prowl for strays to pick off. Or so it seemed to us - as I suggested above, teenagers are sometimes oversensitive to these things. The only other thing I remember is getting back to Leek very late - snow on the moors - and getting unpleasantly drunk on the bus on cheap cider. Happy days.

Quite a few Brum fans doing the old sporting applause - he played for them before us didn't he? We signed him for 100,000. Not sure about the average transfer fee in 1969 but surely that was a lot of money back then?

Steino,Forest Away, On a Sunday I think, Purple Shirts......fantastic Greenhoff's takes some beating though Was a Sunday. Superb away day. 3-2 Indeed it was a Sunday. The Greenhoff goal came at a time when we were top of the league. The Thomas goal effectively ended the career of the Liverpool player who tamely headed the ball to him - Phil Thompson was slaughtered by the press the following day.

Excellent - great video, Roots!
Do you have a video of the goal Dave Watson scored against Southampton in the early 80ies? That was a right screamer that deserves to be shown again.

didnt go brum to see the greenhoff goal, but remember watching it on "star soccer" on sunday afternoon. huw johns was the commentater i think i recall. went the game the week after at elland road with my brother, remember walking from the railway station to the ground and been bricked.this little old man stood in front of me crying with blood flowing from his skull.typical leeds fans, always enjoyed bricking people if i remember right. once inside the ground we had to stand with the leeds fans.they fans were chanting "hey rock n roll, shilton scored a goal!" [think he had scored a goal for leicester straight from a goal kick previously] watched wareys goal on sky i think. great mental! steino's goal was one of the best goals i have ever seen. micky thomas's goal i missed, i went the loo. i missed the other one too!

I was at all of those except forest away - the Peterborough game goes down as one of my personal all time favourite games, lost my voice singing we're the famous stoke city and we're going to wemberlee...... couldn't say much at brum ! Thirtyeiighth - i recall the leeds fans were singing " hey rock and roll , shiltons scored a goal " because he had cocked up and they had just scored ! Bad memories of that day though there was quite a few of us there and even more when the leeds lot came in at the end !!

Stopped off in a little town on the way back for more beer and Chips (or maybe chinese..). Other Stokies had the same idea and had a good sing song there too I was on the TV after the game shouting "We want Lou, We want Lou". Had the game on VHS. Watched several times. Buggered if I have a clue where that is now!!

Great memories and thanks for the clips. Under the radar it was indeed at the Brum game. The only one I didnt do out of that lot was Peterborough. The game and goal that broke the tosspot Durhams heart. "Them Stoke bastards, Goughy!"
