TP will probably go for 2 wingers and shotton or delap or both. On the basis we stand a better chance of getting a result by winning lots of throw-ins and free kicks and putting pennant/ethers/delap/shotts in charge of the set pieces than by trying to out football them. Given they are used to playing Barca and Real Madrid I would be very surprised if he thought it wise to bank on us outplayng them with passing and movement that is too clever for them to cope with Whoever he picks , we should all get behind them and make the Brit as loud as we can . Because this is the clubs biggest game in years and they will need all the help they can get.

Begovic, Shotton Huth Upson Wilson, Pennant Delap Etherington, Jerome, Crouch Jones.
After watching them recently they are not too keen on high crosses. Therefore the 2 wingers and the slingshot are essential. Hence my choice of Crouch and Jones together. I'd give the Jon Walters role to Jerome. Walters needs a rest desperately and I'd like to see T.P. go with an attacking line up and formation for once!!!! I know it's highly unlikely but I suppose I can always dream

Pulis says that we need to play with width and stretch Valencia. "Two wide players are going to be very important to us if we're going to do that" Pennant and Etherington hopefully gonna start! GET IN!!!!! www.stokecityfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10310~2612164,00.html

Jones and Crouch together are a disaster. Need Ric on if he is fit enough.

really buzzin for this one, and the welcome break from the Premier League! So TP drops a big hint that Ethers and JP will start, so that means with Delap (already been said he's fit and raring) playing that Crouch will too, the throw will be used as much as possible I imagine. Lets chuck Palacios in too Tone along with Ric and have a rate good go, get the bloody natives bouncing!! Make the most of this people it may be a long time before we see a top Euro side come here for a competitive game again.

GET IN!!!!! www.stokecityfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10310~2612164,00.html It is absolutely CRUCIAL that Pennant starts this game. It's the single most important aspect of the team selection if we're to have any sniff of a chance in the away leg.

I'd like to see Jerome up front with Crouch, I'd also like to see Palacios start in the middle. Don't think either will happen.

Can't wait to see how Valencia deal with the long throws! Same as how the other European sides we've come up against so far have dealt with them: Fall over and cry foul. European refs will fall for it too - Expect the whistle on about three out of every four of our set-pieces into the box.

Matchday! Goarn!
I'd go with the following team
Begovic
Shotton Shawcross Huth Wilson
Pennant Palacios Whitehead Etherington
Jerome Jones
Plenty of energy, plenty of height and still the long throw from Shotton.

2 things are certain tonight, pulis will play a target man and a player with the long throw. But which would you choose? Kenwyne who has strength in the box, when he decides to use it and has a good goalscoring record in Europa or crouch whose more consistent and can link up play with pennant and matty (if they are both on). Also would you play shotton who looks to be getting better at linking up with pennant but whose defensive positioning is still not quite there, or delap whose experience is vast and is less likely to be intimidated?
Personally I would go for: Sorro shotton Huth Ryan Wilson pennant palacios whitehead matty jerome and jones.
That team can link up on both wings, has a target man that is lethal with crosses, two wingers to play them to him and jerome to do most of the legwork, who I'd swap for fuller on about 70 mins unless he was having a blinder. For me delap cannot start, he has lost a yard of pace. Now I don't particularly like whitehead but alongside palacios that could be a solid centre midfield. It needs to hold strong and have lots of energy, delap no longer has these traits. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised to see Diao or whelan in there instead of palacios but in my opinion that team is our strongest vs Valencia that we could hope for.

IF we start with two wingers, you can bet your life that Fuller and Palacios won't be in the starting line up.
A midfield of Rory/Whelan is nailed on and Crouch and Walters will be up front if the two wingers play.
Wilko at right back please?

Crouch simply because of his superior experience in European football.
Alongside him I'd happily see Jerome get a go, I think them two could be a great partnership. Wouldn't have Rory in the starting 11 but you know Pulis will.
My team:
Sorensen
Shotton Huth Shawcross Wilson
Pennant Whitehead Palacios Etherington
Jerome Crouch
Subs: Begovic, Wilkinson, Upson, Whelan, Delap, Walters, Fuller, Jones.

Crouch is an absolute must - experienced in europe and against top opposition, he's been there and done it. unlike the majority of our side. he HAS to play. I also think tonight is a game for rory - long throws will scare the hell out of them im sure.
This game is ALL about the ref. If he is decent and doesn't blow his whistle every time we cross/chuck it in the box then we have a chance. If he falls for their play acting and collapsing at each corner etc then we won't score cos they will do it all night.

I think we can all agree, tonight is going to be an occasion that will stay with us forever whatever the result. Let's give the lads our best possible vocal backing tonight and show our appreciation to them, because whatever happens over these next two Valencia games, our European return has been a success story. We've surpassed expectations and beaten some very high profile opposition along the way. These are the best times in the clubs history, we should all soak up every moment of nights like this and hope the result takes care of itself.
Come on you mighty potters !!!

Have none of you noticed that Rory's throws in the home Europa league games, particularly down the length of the Seddon Stand, are nullified by the hoardings being to close to the widened pitch?
He can't get a run up and subsequently the trajectory of his throw from that side of the pitch is altered and is less threatening as a result.

I would like to see Delap starting with Palacios, but if he plays on the wing, I might cry.. Surely a 1-0 win is the absolute minimum we need tonight to stand any real chance over the two legs? We have to stop them scoring.
